I’ve never referenced my clients as “customers” but recently started working with someone new to B4 (he came from industry). Does anyone else call their clients “customer”?

No because im not a client of Walmart

Customers/clients, coworkers/colleagues, pay/compensation, use/leverage, templates/accelerators, etc. This is how language works from a socioeconomic standpoint and I know this because I learned it the hard way.

Customer is typically used when buying goods, while client is typically used when providing a service. Client is standard for professional services industries

like

This is correct and I don’t know why people are making other distinctions on here

But I feel like client is more customary for b2b, customer for b2c. Have to be careful though with what you call your client's customer though. Example: in mortgage, "borrower" is a common industry term, but many wealth management firms still refer to them as clients due to the broader relationship.

like

I mean..you are providing a service to them and they pay you/your company for said service. Sooo they are customers of your business. But I see what you mean. I don’t or wouldn’t call them customers because it can be a bit odd just because it’s not standard in the industry

like

Usually do customers (or end consumers) for retail services, clients for commercial

like

In tech, customers are…customers. That’s why we have functions called “Customer Success”, “Chief Customer Officer”, etc..

like

Because they are customers

like

It’s always been my thought that they’re a “customer” if you’re selling them something tangible (software, widgets, etc.), but a “client” if you’re selling them something that isn’t (services, advice, etc.) So my clients are clients, but were I to move to a software company, they would then be customers.

like

I work for an engineering firm and the only time we call the client a customer is when we are talking to an equipment supplier and refer to our client as the end customer. Since they are the ones receiving the product. But in any other context they are the client.

No

I call them customers all the time. They are paying for a service, hence they are your customer but they are also a client, is this an issue though? It’s like paying for internet service, you aren’t a client of ATT for their service you are a customer. Either is fine, you won’t get called out for one or another

At google now. We call them customers and not clients.

You know what’s wild? In nursing school and in hospitals they refer to patients as “clients”

I think they refer to all the end users of all medical services as patients.

Yes it was a change for me. Customer and client are interchangeable and they preferred customer

No but I do speak about my client’s buyers as their customers

Client is a subset of customer

When I’m talking to the client - I refer to them as my customer not my client. My client is the CxO; my customer is ACME Corporation

If selling a SaaS product, or managed service, yes

Thoughts on Masters in Environmental Management programs? UCSB, Yale, etc. I have a non-technical degree (Bachelor of Arts) and have been in management consulting at a Big 4 the last 5 years. I want to pivot my career to do something more meaningful - make a positive impact in the world, rather than continuing to help rich corporations get richer. Thinking that doing a Masters will help arm myself with environmental / sustainability knowledge and a network.

Hi Imad! I recently started at B4, realizing after compliance busy season I’m more interested in audit. Internally transfer doesn’t seem guaranteed and will take at least 6+ months. (Cont.)

How do the independence rules vary between the big 4 related to non-audit employees owning stock? I’ve heard EY takes the most conservative stance. I know Deloitte consulting is separate and doesn’t have the same restrictions as audit.

Does anyone work in a Big 4 office in the Bay Area? I’m currently at a V5 law firm doing M&A tax, and the hours are absolutely killing me. I’m curious about the hours and pay at the Big 4 here.
