How many billable hours do you charge a year?
My HR rep told me that to apply for your CPA license in MA you only need 1 year of work experience, not 2009 billable hours. Didn't sound right- can anyone confirm/deny?
What the most outrageous billable hours you can confirm at your firm? Just learned from a partner that the highest billers at my firm came in at 3600, 3500 and 3200. Seems fishy to me.
I’m in dire need of a day off. I feel so guilty saying that bc I work minimal billable hours right now. Weekends are for catching up on personal life (finding groceries/ordering grocery delivery, meal prep, laundry, cleaning, etc) and workdays are consumed with screens. I just want a day to do things that bring joy. Bitch move to use “lady probs” to ask for a day off?
Does anyone else here feel that you can either be a good attorney or have a life, but not both? I was told I need to do more billable hours so I have been grinding 10+ hours a day. I can tell the partners are pleased but I am becoming so burned out and irritable in my real life. Any WLB advice is appreciated!
I just started at a new firm 3 months ago. A big jump for me with 1,800 billable hours. I feel like I’m drowning trying to make the hours :( I am exhausted at the end of every day. Does it get easier?
I’m thankfully hitting my hours, but my firm keeps passing non-billable work my way. I am grateful for the opportunities, but this type of work always seems to find its way to the female associates at my firm. We have been told that non-billable work is irrelevant in terms of our annual hours. Any tips on how to navigate this in a thoughtful way? I want to be a team-player, but I believe that others need to step up to the plate.
What happens if you don’t meet utilization targets in a year? I switched from audit to advisory and have been here 2 months and my billable hours are way less than I was expecting (avg 30 a week). I’ve had good feedback on my projects and ask for more work in my down time, but the change of pace from when I was in audit is stressing me out.
How does consulting work at Deloitte? I am an Accounting major and know about billable for tax and audit. How many hours of billable work are you expected to work at Deloitte SAP practice? Are you expected to work 50+ billable every week? Thank you. How hard is it? Just want info before I make a decision whether to jump ship.
For drafting a stock purchase agreement for first few shots as a junior/mid level, how many billable hours spent are appropriate?
Two of my really good friends at work have had their work dry up in the past few months (because of the Rona). I'm like two months ahead of them on hours, and they're worried about not making their minimum billable requirements. Feel sort of guilty and try to avoid talking about hours with them. I'm just hoping the firm doesn't give them trouble...
I can't wait 'til the day I can quit. As audit ain't nothing but bullshit. Audit programs won't be a bore. Time entry won't be a chore. Realization, billable hours will be no more.
Laughing in billable hours
Non-political poll - how many non-billable hours have you logged so far this year? I’ll start: 143
My peers are not getting as much work as me. I pride myself on being a hard worker and a team player, but it’s getting out of hand. I have been working 80+ billable hours the past month+
Received an offer at an insurance defense firm for $75K. 2K billable hours requirement with bonuses for going above. Is this offer any good? And should I attempt to negotiate? Any help would be appreciated!
Anyone here at Holland & Knight? I’m considering a move but have recently read stories about mass exits by Black attorneys - no one has really explained why. I’m a Black female, looking to move for better exit opportunities, firm culture, international and emerging technology work. Any insight including billable requirements will be appreciated. Target location is the Denver office.
I see other posts claiming there are law firms with 1600-1700 hour billable targets. I need to know how to find these. I'm sure it would be a pay cut but I'd rather have more time than more money.
How many real hours does it take to reach 8-10 billable hours? First year associate here wondering what a 8-10 billable hour day would look like now that I’m seeing my workload ramp up slowly but surely.
What are your plans for Mother’s Day? Eating out or dining in? Where you going or what are you making?
Any advice on when to contact HR for a position I interviewed for almost 2 weeks ago? If they’re not contacting me they’re not interested, still interviewing or haven’t yet made a decision...

Have my CPA but thinking about becoming a certified financial planner after leaving public accounting. How difficult and time consuming is the exam compared to the CPA? Is it worth it?
New moms, how did you manage new born? I am in this situation - no family support ( they can’t come due to flight ban from my home country) , me and my husband both have 3 months parental leave. I am due soon and dreading thinking about what should i do to prep for post delivery recovery, food and baby care. Please provide some insights 🙏
Hi ladies! We started this bowl because a few of us recently took new positions in the midst of COVID and are struggling with WFH. Here’s my story, please share yours! Just moved to a new country and joined a big local firm as a junior. I am a chronic procrastinator and I think it’s because I have low self-confidence, esp. with my writing style. Accountability is key to my productivity, and unless I’m micromanaged, I struggle to self-discipline. Will be sharing resources and tips in next post!
At what salary point did you feel “content” if ever? At $90k, and I’ve always figured once I got to $200k I’d be “good” and chill out, thoughts on that?
I live in and absolutely love California. No other state compares in my mind (industry, career opportunities, salary, culture, diversity, food, weather, landscape, political inclination, etc). If I were to consider temporarily (2-3 years) moving to another state to accumulate more wealth on the way to FI, what states (specifically cities) would make me least miserable?
What’s Ross’s stereotype? Is it possible to get into MBB or FAANG post graduation? What is the student body like? Is it reputable?
Anyone here a Soho House member? I'm a fan of them from a hospitality perspective, just not sure if it's worth it. Obviously COVID has changed a lot but after the world heals, is it worth it? Do either of the houses in NYC have a good enough gym to cancel my gym membership?

As an ADC applying this summer for 2022 start, I haven’t gotten a chance to connect with any L.E.K. Consulting members and I really want to get to know the company better before moving on with my application. Any L.E.K. Consulting fish out there willing to spare a few minutes to chat about their work, the company, the culture etc? Thanks!
What was the first true asset you bought (positive income generation) and how did you decide on it? Not talking about stocks or 401k, more secondary property to rent, small business, etc. Thanks!
Advice on how to offset capital gains with a loss. I averaged down on a stock (chk) for years until it finally went bankrupt (lesson learned). The rest of my portfolio is 👍🏼 and I’m realizing approx $20k this year. When I go to sell chk it will be approx $30k loss. Should I wait to sell it next year when I plan to sell my rental property, to offset capital gains? I think you can offset 3k a year, right? Or sell $3k of chk now before January to realize those losses to offset 2020 gains?
Deloitte fish, which medical insurance plan is better? I’m looking at AETNA and UHG PPO. Comparing only these two. If anyone can explain the details and benefits, it’d be great.
