I’ve noticed that I am finding it hard to leave work “at work” and also not detaching myself emotionally from work. For example, if I send out a contract and it’s heavily marked up, I see red (no pun intended). Ill also think about it non stop until I provide my response (which is not good in am angered state. I’ve tried the standard coping mechanisms (count to 10, workout, etc.), but doesn’t help. Is this burnout? Any tips here?

It’s easy to say but you have to accept that the contract (or whatever else you’re working on) doesn’t matter (really at all) and the redline from the other side is just another person doing their job and isn’t a reflection on you as a person in any way. Some of this is a matter of confidence but it’s mostly developing a healthy prospective of the relative importance of what you’re doing to the universe (which is basically none). Do your best and don’t worry about the rest.

Much appreciated! Sounds like I need to set up some mental discipline/barriers

It’s silly, but at work I literally pretend I’m an actor playing the role of a lawyer. Reframing it that way made it non-personal. Yes I need to do a good job to get bigger better roles and make more money, but the underlying subject matter is just a script. If I yell or project anger, it’s not because I’m actually feeling that emotion, but because I’ve decided it’s strategic to my character’s goals and motivations to do so.

I first started doing it to deal with my imposter syndrome back when, but it’s been helpful to keep an even keel as a fellow ADHD lawyer. But that’s just how my crazy brain works

Your character should also read “how to win friends and influence people” “the art of war” and “the prince.”

All great resources for getting dumb clients or dumb opposing counsel to do what you want.

Just try to care less about work and realize you don’t live to work. That’s all I got.

16 weeks and so worried all of the stress I’m under is going to hurt the baby. Between work, my own scary (non-pregnancy) health stuff, the pandemic, my mom (who is a widow and lives alone, basically isolated by choice due to covid) is having health issues, and pressures to keep billable hours up, I’ve been having complete breakdowns. Today I spent almost the entire day crying and now have to make up the billable time this weekend. I really worry abt what effect this will have on the babe.

Any recommendations on a medical insurance for outside visitors coming to the USA? My parents will be coming to the US for 3 months. They will be staying with me, quarantining until they get a negative test result and we are all being very careful, but knowing the cost of medical care it seems prudent to buy a visitor insurance. They do have an insurance back at home but it covers up to 50k abroad which sadly is not a lot for the USA... Thank you very much for your help!

I just spoke with a software architect that went back to school to learn software engineering after law school because it was more lucrative and had less hours. He’s worked his way up and has the skills and authority to work 6:30am-10am and gets to work remotely. We discussed that results/outputs is better than billable time like in law and public accounting. Yet, his parents and others would view him as “lazy” but he does his job and makes a fantastic living. Time>Money and Results>Hours

I am coach for someone in the USDC. I was talking about the pension and I was told that they only get the 401. I looked at our 401k plan and noticed the match is very poor. The match is .25. So basically if a practitioner makes $100,000 and gives 6%, then D only puts in $1500 annually. This is horrible and if I was being honest then I would advise people to look to a company that cares for their future. I googled average matches and Deloitte is not even close to the average.

I see a lot of posts out there about huge salaries and whatnot, but I can’t help but think the things I do most days don’t really require a law degree and can competently be done by intelligent business minded folks, such as contract drafting/negotiation and strategy development, and as such I am overpaid. After ten years of doing this work, I struggle to define what special attributes I bring to the process since it all seems so simple. Just wondering if anyone shares the same feelings.

I went in-house 3 years ago. At the time, I was interviewing with 2 companies. One company was a much better cultural fit for me and I was 1 of 2 finalists. But they chose the other applicant. I got the other job and have been there ever since. The work is ok,but I still struggle with company culture daily. 3 years later, the original job that I wanted has been reposted. Reach out to the GC directly to show interest? Is it worth moving from a comfy job just bc I think the culture will be better?
