I’ve reached the conclusion that I have a drinking problem I need to address. Based on my present circumstances, I believe a residential program is the right approach. I’ve identified a few potential programs & am scheduling conversations this weekend to see which is the right fit. For STD, I need a doctor to provide a letter. I haven’t been to a psych in a while since my PCP prescribes my Zoloft. Should I make an appointment with him to get the letter? Any insights are greatly appreciated.

Proud of you. This is the hardest step.

So I wanted to follow up to this post.

Thank you all for the encouragement and support. Today is my 41st day sober and I feel great. I went to a detox & residential program for 20 days then moved to a PHP program for the last 21 days. I am spending the next 30 days in an IOP program.

The experience has been phenomenon and I am truly grateful to have had this opportunity.

Thank you everyone!

No insight to share on the question at hand because I got sober before I started my career...but I promise this will be worth it...and in the moments when it seems like it’s not...talk it out. Best of luck!

Your residential program will have a doctor to fill out the STD form. Congrats on making a decision to get well.

Second this. If you are going to a program covered by insurance it should be medically supervised. They can write the letter during intake and the facility should also be able to help coordinate any paperwork needed to return post-stay.

Congratulations on taking the biggest bravest step there is! We’ll be here when you return.

Really proud of you for taking this step. Either your primary or the facility should be able to provide the documentation needed for an std.

Thanks

I did this last year. Was at big4, UHC but can’t remember my plan. I didn’t pay a dime. And my rehab took care of all the paperwork. I was there 3 months; no hassle whatsoever. Tremendously thankful for it and I’ve been sober ever since. Feel free to DM me. And I think it’s badass you’re exploring this option.

I contacted the office manager at my PCP, and she was my biggest supporter. She made getting medical certifications a breeze, by putting the forms in front of the doctor to sign and getting them back to me on the same day. Congrats on the decision. If you need support along the way, let me know. I did an intensive outpatient program for 8 weeks, and just celebrated 8 months sober.

Whether you get the STD or not, it’s totally worth it.

I found AA (through a bit of a miracle) a year before I tried to take a Leave of Absence. My goal was to get STD because I was seeing a therapist, but it was only approved for 3 weeks (I wanted 3 months). I was so pissed! In hindsight, those three months of time to work on myself were worth more than any paycheck.

I wish I had known rehab was an option (I lived in a bit of a bubble...). I’ve heard the people who find success do at least 90 days and they get as deeply into AA as they can, and then they continue to go to AA the minute they get out of rehab.

Good luck!

Wow, looking at programs, my insurance barely covers it... per My insurance they will cover $1,280 of $4,860, for a 5 day program, so only about 26% leaving $3,580 or $716 a day. Most places I spoke to are 30 day programs meaning I’m gonna owe $21,480.

JFC, no wonder so many people don’t get help.

I was lucky that insurance covered me 100 percent but in the two years after I racked up 40,000 in debt to invest in retreats, health not covered by insurance and unpaid leave for a month. Best money I’ve ever spent. I paid it back in 2 years after getting healthy.

OP good luck!

Anyone else ever told that you go “too above and beyond” for your customers? For example, I deal with a lot of returns and repairs and sometimes customers don’t have their order information. I offer to help them find it with just some supplemental info. Could take anywhere from an extra 5 to 25 min of digging, depending on what info they can provide. Direct manager? Doesn’t care. Her boss however, made that comment this morning when asked about my daily productivity.

My husband is an alcoholic and it’s getting worse with the holidays. He’s started every day drinking high alcohol-content IPAs as early as 8am. And he drinks them all day and all night like soda. He did AA when he was younger but is now vehemently against it. He is high-functioning. Has a PhD from MIT and works for a venture capitalist firm. I wondered how he gets through the day, but he started to come home early (mid-afternoon) and immediately open a beer while working. What should I do?

Went for a pre-employment drug test yesterday. They never asked me if I was on any medications. I had to ask them and was told "oh yeah, just put any you may think make a difference in this text box." I put Xanax, Flexeril, and gabapentin. All of which are prescribed and used as directed. Now I'm terrified that I should have put ALL my meds, to including my psych meds. I've been sober over 12 years and never touched drugs (just booze) but I'm having a full blown panic attack.

My boyfriend of a year got a DUI this weekend and has had drinking problems in the past. He fully admits he is an alcoholic, and will do therapy/go to AA moving forward. My therapist suggested I be a “computer program running in the background” and essentially leave him to allow him to work on himself. This is obviously a really hard decision, and I feel like I should listen to my therapist, but my heart is pulling me the other way. Anyone else been through something similar or have advice?

I’ve been sober a year now, and someone recently reached out to me about not drinking. When I suggested AA, he said ‘washed out people with nothing to lose’ wouldn’t comfort him. And that it was a ‘scared straight’ approach. I know his is a super harsh and ignorant opinion, but I just want to say if you hold it, it’s so far from the truth. Regardless of age, I’ve met some of the coolest unique people I’ve ever come across in aa, and I just felt sad people might hold that opinion of it in 2021

Posting for anyone who may be just “looking at this page” or “sick and tired of being sick and tired”. I found a life through sobriety. It may not be perfect but I no longer HAVE to drink. I never thought it was possible. I wanted to state here that it is. It gets easier as time goes but if you’re fed up know that for many years I HAD to drink. I could not function without it. 24 hours was a miracle to me. If you’re like me you’re reading this and thinking “Bullshit!”. Just try 24 at a time.
