It’s not an investment, it’s a discretionary purchase that will bring joy for what could be a lifetime.
I could also light the money on fire and not change a thing in my life. Could I have invested instead and gotten a better return? Sure, but that’s true for every nonessential purchase. The whole point of making money is to spend it on things/ experiences/ people in ways that you enjoy.
Thanks for sharing. I just need to make internal peace with your last statement- specially since it would be the largest discretionary purchase I’ve made. Regardless, its true that it would bring joy for a lifetime and passed down to family.

The IWC is a nice watch and I’d suggest
finding an AD to try it on as they can wear kind-of big.
Buy what makes you happy and try not to think of it as investment. If you’re marking a significant milestone you’re unlikely to sell it and the watch market isn’t rational. Very few watches actually appreciate so think of it as a sunk cost. I also wouldn’t pull the trigger at the expense of other savings goals (others here will push the other way since you only live once), but if you’re meeting your savings goals and have the funds, why not pull the trigger.
That is exactly where I hesitate - it coming in the way of other financial goals. I’ll just plan out this purchase and have it line up with the milestone I am working towards.

The bezel broke on my Tag and I just got promoted to senior manager with my bonus coming so seemed like the perfect time. While I don’t buy my watches for investments, most of them hold their value so if I’m ever in a pinch and need to sell for cash, I can do well enough. That being said, I bought them because I love them and I could, no other reason.
Congrats! Best reason to buy something, I appreciate that.
I was in the same boat a few years back…loved a luxury watch and was hesitant to purchase because it seemed unnecessary. However I did it to mark a milestone and feel great everytime I put it on. With how rough things are in the world right now, if something will give you happiness, then do it!
A potential way of doing this would be to see if you could use a BNPL offer. While I’ve not seen ADs doing this, several grey market sellers have options that allow you to pay over a period of time, lessening the impact of a large, upfront payment.
That said, I got my first “luxury” watch recently, waited a very long time before I pulled the trigger. I don’t regret it, but I’ve now committed to making one such purchase a year because I enjoy wearing my very expensive watch and I have kept the desire bottled up too long.
Whatever you decide, good luck and if you do buy, wear it in good health.
I’ve always had a nice “mall-brand” quartz and apple watch, but really wanted an automatic for a long time. I couldn’t really justify buying one, until i was shopping for an engagement ring. I had a ballpark budget for the ring, but then i did a lot of research on diamond quality and jewelers near me, and tried to gauge my gf’s preferences. In the end, I was able to get a beautiful ring under by initial budget, and used the “savings” for my first luxury watch.
