I've recently moved to the US from India but now that everything is WFH I'm having a hard time making friends or connections with coworkers. I'm not sure what to do as I'm very lonely.

Get a profile on Shaadi.com Kidding aside, I empathize with you. It’s generally difficult to make friends in a new country, especially if you don’t have shared experiences (like class or office). You will have to put in extra effort to get those shared experiences that create bonding between people. The key here is to have Repeated Shared Experiences. Create those RSEs. Find activities that you’re interested in (or even those that you never had thought about) and figure out what some enthusiasts in that domain are doing. There will definitely be people who are continuing their passions and pastimes one way or another. E.g. if they can’t have a live cooking class, they will be on Zoom. This country has a LOT of opportunities for recreation- far more than I was used to in India. Whether it’s the national parks or campgrounds outdoors, or Dungeons&Dragon or Magic groups, take advantage of them. Every geography and interest will have online communities - whether on Meetup or Facebook or Reddit - go find them. Oh, and if you have not already, get a car. Don’t bother with the Zipcars and Uber/Lyft. Even if it’s a cheap one, get it. The freedom it will give you is unparalleled. (I had gotten first gotten an used motorcycle for $1500, and then later got a 20year old car for the same price) You will have to put in the effort- there’s no two ways about that. But the end result will be worth it, because not only will you have new friends, but also deeper and meaningful relationships with them.

Does your company do any type of “virtual happy hour” or anything social like that? Seek out information about that sort of thing to bring some social element to your Covid life. Another option, not sure if you’re married or not, but hop on a dating app. Tinder, hinge, bumble etc... a lot of people are using these platforms to stay social during these times.

Meetups.com have virtual meetups

I’m so sorry! Do you have a company Slack where you can use something like the #donut bot to set up random pairings for coffee? I love CreativeMornings for virtual events, too, and your location doesn’t matter for those.

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

Thinking about getting a dog. Always wanted one and now I have plenty of time to care for it. But once life resumes I’m not sure. I can’t afford a daily dog walker. Do they really need a midday walk? Thought I could do a walk in the morning, right after work and before bed. I would work from home 2 days a week so could do midday walks then.

I am working at MSLGROUP as an Associate, less than 1 yoe , they have asked me to relocate in 4 weeks to the Location (currently wfh). Also I have an offer from one of the competitors based in my City. Relocating will shoot up my expenses and joining the competitor is kind of a downgrade in terms of brand. What do you think guys?

Partners - what was your rationale on staying for the partner track? As a M, I feel that I’m in a fork in the road (SM into partner track vs private accounting). I’m stressed with WFH fatigue, and considering leaving but want to make sure I’m making the best decision LT (despite ST stress).

How hard is it to go in-house once you're a partner? I'm up for evaluation this winter at a smaller BigLaw firm, but I'm questioning whether that's the route I want to go long term. There are plenty of remote jobs in my practice area (patents/IP, computer science focus). Making matters more difficult is that my wife and I will be starting IVF in Jan., and I know parental leave/benefits don't kick in for a bit. If I go through the shareholder process, will it be hard to go in-house?

Do other firms pay UG campus hires more than campus hires from the previous year, even accounting for their raise? Ex: 2019 Campus hire starts at 70k, raise to 75k after year 1; 2020 Campus hire starts at 76k. Or is this just a Deloitte thing?

Okay everyone, I need to rant here. I'm so sick and tired of getting an email everyday! And I mean every single day getting a COVID 19 email saying there are cases. My school gets so many cases, I firmly believe we need to go back on lock down and online. This is getting ridiculous that we put state funding over the well being of our students and staff!! I dont want to get sick nor get covid or spread it to our students. And our job wonders why no one wants to work for us and stay working.

Current comp is near the top of the band for a role I was offered. If I jumped I would be taking a ~7% increase while I was hoping for something closer to 20%. Is it possible to counter and push past the band? I was offered a raise during my interview process so the original jump of 15% was decreased to 7% based on my new salary.
