My suggestion... Send them an email regarding the asset as one day they will wake up and serve you notice.
They will do this despite the fact that they forgot to collect it... IT department will give some excuse and so will the HR and you will be the fall guy.
Return it , it's not worth it to have a sword hanging in your head.
But, then this is my suggestion.

I guess it was a refurbished one that they issued and it was about to be retired so they didn't care about it anymore and they probably wrote it off their books!
They can wake up at any point, so it's better to return it or wait.
