Different teams are using it differently, and in some teams it has become a stepping stone (although more realistically, it’s been an outlet to provide some upward movement to directors who would otherwise be stuck without promotion for many years).
Instead of “realistically” I would say “historically.” There a number of teams that have now embraced this as a new path to fully replace the D->P admit process in order to provide more recognition and comp improvement while building the partner case
It makes it easier for when they spin-off the non-audit practices
At KPMG, MD is required role before partner for Advisory and Tax and has been like that for a decade. Only audit still promotes direct to partner and that seems to be driven by state accountancy rules in some instances. There are still a few Audit MDs too and it’s sort of unclear how they use that role.
At ZS we have only one path and no MD role so curious to understand do some folks stay MD for ever and is that considered a reasonable career path?

Of course. It’s a significant accomplishment freed of forced retirement. Good gig.
The ratio of Director —> Partner at PwC far outnumbers Director —> MD. The latter is really used in exceptional situations

They hired so many of our directors at Ps that they cannot sustain their internal path to P.
