I’ve surpassed my billable target by 200 hours already and I am one of the highest billers (firm is transparent with associate hours). Ive been saying no to all new work—currently staffed on 5 active deals. Two of my deals just went pencils down and the other 3 just signed/filed so I’ll have several quiet weeks before mid December. Am I justified in continuing to say no despite likely billing less than 10 hrs a week or should I take on more work to fill my next several weeks?

Take vacation so you don’t even have to worry about saying no?

like

Not being on vacation and turning down work left and right doesn’t achieve this purpose. You might as well have a reason for turning down the work which would be vacation. And if not, make sure that you at least say yes some of the time especially to the partners that matter to you.

like

Take a vacation and then let the partners know that you would like to get staffed after the vacation.

like

I just think you should be careful not to appear like you're not a team player. If there are other people that need the hours, then yes recommend them. But be careful about turning people off.

like

Also year end is crunch time and usually a blood bath given the amount of people trying to get one last deal in so if you just leave your group to fend for themselves when you have nothing to do that doesn’t look good.

like

Lol Associate 1, you are right. Shouldn’t have worked so hard til now I guess!

Can’t remember anything *good* beyond a week. They can definitely remember bad things beyond a week 😂

Are you going to make more money for accruing more hours? If not, take a vacation. You’re already one of the highest billers. You have nothing to prove. It seems to be more exhausting to say, “No” all the time instead of actually being unavailable while on vacation. And you want to be a “team player” by staying on when you surpassed it? Doesn’t that mean you should still say “Yes” and try to get 40 hours. I’d just take the last two weeks in December off.

like

Not really. Take vacation as others are suggesting; otherwise “I have worked hard previously” is unlikely to cut it on 10hr/wk. At least if you surpass minimum further you might get a bit more bonus…?

Take a vacation.
