You can’t compete with this in school and though it’s great for the kids to connect with you on that level sometimes, it’s my opinion you maybe shouldn’t. Just like a parent just can’t be a friend all the time and needs to parent, A teacher can’t be a friend all the time and just needs to teach.
I’m sorry but I don’t think it’s my job to compete. I’m a pretty young teacher and grew up with technology and social media - guess what, I still listened to my teachers and did the work! You can make assignments and lectures relevant, but I shouldn’t have to get on tiktok to engage my students. For me, that’s taking it too far to expect teachers to do that because at the end of the day getting on social media and doing the dog and pony show is still learning which isn’t as fun as their video games or silly videos.
As teachers we have to do what works for us. If you are “old school” or don’t care for innovation that is fine, as long as you are comfortable and getting results. At the same time don’t lecture others for trying something new. You know the saying “different strokes for different folks.” Just do you and be happy when others do them. Now, if your old school and you could get more engagement then why not try it? What if it works?
I think TikTok could be awesome, just be very careful. I’ve heard stories of kids taking those videos and editing them in less than flattering ways. You know your kids- if you think they’ll be cool, go for it! I would never risk it with my group, unfortunately ☹️
I can think the most important thing is still maintaining your teacher student relationships. That’s what engages them.
I have thought a lot about this over the years. I have seen fads come and go but good old fashioned teaching never goes out. Sure I still make teaching fresh at times by trying what’s new, but I continue to do what works best and what students remember most—it’s caring and inspiring them to think beyond the fads and fancy new gadgets.
Well said! One of my favorite things is when my students realize that they have capable minds and can think and analyze and decide for themselves. As you say, bells and whistles change, but classic things never go out of style.
A daily podcast for high school complete with music to make it more interesting. Example: I was teaching on Napoleon and Tsar Alexander I and their “bromance” which opened the door for some old 80’s ballads. The kids think it’s funny and they write me to tell me how much they like them. I may not ever come back to work after this! Lol
That is so cool! I would love to hear that.
I engage them with their grades! Take that Tik Tok!
There goes my hope and dreams with these new apps and watchamacallits...I use humor...a heavy dose of it, they teach me and in return I tell them how to grow old as meself.
I applaud you. It is always good to stay relevant and engaging in how you present material. However, don't get caught in the rabbit hole, so to speak.
Wow. I haven’t thought of it like that. I am just trying to combine Mr Rogers, Mrs Fizzle and The Avengers in my virtual teaching persona! Without special affects....hmmmmm
I don’t compete. I use Whole Brain Teaching methods, a lot of “call and response”. Keep students participating. Play a game together at the beginning of the day like asking yes/no questions for “What’s on my desk?” Or, play Taboo with your students. Take time each week to just connect with your students by having fun together!
We were already competing with those things.
I have been using the online program Seesaw. You can create a free account from now till the end of the year. Seesaw has some amazing premise lessons and/or you can make up your own very quickly.
I believe in student centered learning. I think this is a great time to allow students to drive instruction and exercise their agency in the learning process. I’m not trying to sell students information. I create learning experiences that allow them to explore and discover. I believe this is vital for retention and autonomy for students. Their learning needs to be about them. So instead of competing with online platforms like tik tok, I’m creating experiences that could possibly allow them to use those platforms in their learning process.
Also remember that many students are not allowed on Tik Tok so make sure to have an alternative engagement piece to make it equitable.
I LOVE THIS!
Hmm...no special effects? Why bother? 😂
