I’ve worked at the same big 3 boutique since I was a clerk. I’m a NEP now. I work in a mid to small market town. One of the partners in one of our larger offices wants me to move to their market. I have a great relationship with this partner and they are telling me they are planning to retire in 5 years. They have a sizable book of business. I have two small kids, my wife is an attorney who practices in state court. I’ll never be more than a well-regarded service partner if I stay. Would you go?

How does your wife feel about the decision to move?

She’s hesitant but not adverse. We haven’t decided anything and of course she needs to be onboard to even consider it. It’s a big change and inertia at this point in our lives is a struggle. We are settled in many regards

Well, where would you be moving to? Is there a pay increase that matches increase in cost of living? Do you see yourself living in that market or do you love where you are as a matter of life, friends, family, etc? Personally I value the latter the most so I would consider those factors more if I were in your shoes

Based on this sentiment alone, the choice to move seems obvious. Even aside from the work benefits, the life benefits seem to make this one clear. I say this as someone who lives in a large city and you couldn’t pay me enough to live in the middle of nowhere.

My firm recently moved me to a new practice area. The partner who I have worked with for quite some time does not have enough work, and she does not want to be in a supervisory, teaching role. The firm moved me without having a real conversation, and the practice areas are like night and day. On one hand, I am extremely grateful to have a job. However, I am afraid that this jump could stunt my career since the new area has few exit opportunities. Any thoughts on how to proceed? Leave my firm?

I have a JD working at a small law firm. Is a contracts manager position a good entry level role to try and move up the in house ladder?

It seems like there’s a huge range of salaries for “art directors” even within the same city... Does anyone have insight to what range I would be looking at (overall range, lower end of range because I’m a junior currently?). I have been working consistently for 2.5 years since I’ve been out of school, but I’ve worked several part time/freelance jobs and have had several internships throughout schooling years too (total EXP = 6 years?). Would be jumping ship, not an internal promotion. Thanks!

I’ve already exited consulting and don’t care to go back. Have MS from a T10 relevant to my field and no plans to change industries or vertical. Mid-30s in a mid-level strategic role in F500. Would my MS and experience suffice, or do I really need the EMBA for advancement?

Is IB worth the sacrifice of WLB? Obvious pay is really good but are the prestige and pay worth it if you’re planning on only doing it for a couple years?

Currently working at an IRA with great WLB. Honestly I love my job, the firm, and people I work with.

Also doing MBA part time at a T15 school. Thinking about switching to IB but I’ve done my research and I think I would burn out of IB in two years but I might be ok with that for the opportunities after.

HR vent of the day - New president of the company wrote a policy without my knowledge and released it to the employees. The policy basically says that they shall not park within a specific area due to construction but should park in 2 other lots (there a 4 lots total). I get a message this morning to write up DAs for people parked in the 4th lot that was not discussed in the policy. I refused because the policy was vague and really open ended. Apparently I’m playing word games and nit picky. 🤦‍♀️

I’d like to sleep through from 11-7 as I used to. I guess the good thing is I don’t need an alarm anymore.

Hi! First off, I know none of this constitutes legal advice, etc., but I’d like some outside perspectives and advice here.

My wife found out she makes ~25% less that her male co-worker did when he was her level of seniority, and they have the same job responsibilities and the exact same credentials (same undergrad, masters program, etc.); he now makes 50% more than she does, but has 3 more years of WE, so to me that’s not as applicable.

Does she have a claim here? Need any other details?
