I’ve worked in advertising and digital media/entertainment in Sydney and NYC. I started as a copywriting intern at Saatchi & Saatchi, moved on to creative strategy, account management and, finally, ad sales/creative operations management for DiscoveryInc. I had to take a break from working then COVID hit. I’m now struggling to get back in the game (in LA) and am also wrestling with what job I actually want/can do as well as what’s even out there as an option. What advice would give?

I’d echo Analyst1, the first step would be to figure out what you enjoyed about your previous roles, and what you want to do. From there, you can tailor your resume to fit the skills of that department. Personally, I started out doing social media/community management/strategy, then pivoted to account mgmt, which is where I’ve been for the majority of my career. I’m also in LA, so happy to chat more if you’d like to DM

Not related to what you asked, but since you have a background in media, Im inquisitive to know what’s your favorite marketing campaign?

I would write down the aspects you liked about your previous jobs. For example, did you like creative ideation? Writing? What are your values? It’s also super helpful to do informational interviews with people who have jobs you’re interested in, and ask them what they like and don’t like about their jobs. Since you’ve worked at several different companies, it’ll be super easy to send LinkedIn messages to people who worked at those companies and actually get responses. Not only will you get a better understanding of what you want, it’ll help open your network and maybe lead to referrals. There’s also this book called “Designing your life” by Bill Burnett that has helpful exercises and questions to help you figure out exactly what you want!

Possibly a dumb question from an intern but why do people go into specific software jobs? For example kpmg has oracle, workday, Salesforce, etc. I see this being super dead end unless you plan to work in that software forever and move up that way. I don’t see many exit opps and personally doesn’t seem fun to work on one software everyday. Please let me know if missing something

Haven’t had my nails done since pre Covid. My cuticle are grown out, it’s bad and I’m scared to go to salon. But I have an event in less than two weeks. I am afraid they’ll push and cut my cuticle and I’ll get a million hang nails. Should I go twice in two weeks and ask them to ease into it. Or should spend first week prepping my nails/cuticles and then get them done right before the event? I am not good at doing my own nails.

Just told my fairly new bf how much I make and he makes 3 times of how much I’m making right now. I had a big career setback because of covid and my salary hasn’t increased for a while. He cares about money and being rich so much I feel like he might dump me at some point. I won’t be upset if he does because that’s on him, but I feel so insecure about how ridiculously poorly I’m doing in life:(. Just wanted to let it out

Got promoted to senior but did not get a raise to go with it. Firm keeping salaries flat this year due to COVID-19, but I was shocked when I found out promoted staff wouldn’t be getting a raise either. To me, this whole thing rings hollow because the firm has told us multiple times that they were projecting flat growth for the year when compared to last year (which was one of the best in firm history). So it pisses me off that they shot their mouth off about how great year last year was...cont

What type of self help strategies do individuals actually find helpful when you feel burn out or stuck in a rut? Any books, apps, meditation, podcasts, etc, others find helpful? Looking to see what type of self help others find actually beneficial and would love to use that to help others stuck in burn out too

Unvaccinated people need to stop with the “but if you’re vaccinated why do you care” argument. Unvaccinated people are akin to drunk drivers. Even if I am sober and wearing my seatbelt, a drunk driver could still cause serious harm to me, my family, and those I care about. An unvaccinated person has a higher likelihood of catching and spreading Covid to others because they are cowards who care only about themselves. You are harming other people.

I've worked from home since March of 2020. I am nervous to go back to the office. I know it will be an adjustment to get to a hybrid schedule. But... I'm also really relieved. I think that WFH has negatively impacted my marriage. I know things won't go immediately back to where they were pre-Covid. And I'm nervous about not seeing my toddler as much and how my dogs will do. But I'm excited for this new chapter.

Applying for a couple of things and randomly decided to google myself to see what recruiters might see. Had helped a friend out way way back with a school project and came across her blog post about it on her personal website in which she says the reason she asked me to help is because she trusted my opinion since I am a “harsh critic.” I think she meant keen critic or that this was supposed to be a positive but to me, this reads as an insult (continued in comments)
