I’m new to billable hours, I come from a litigation firm where we didn’t have any billing requirements. Now a few months in I’m being called out by my managing partner each month for not meeting the hours.
I set expectations that it will take me time to get the hang of things and I haven’t missed any deadlines reports or appearances. Additionally, my hours have been increasing month over month and last month I was only 5 hours under the minimum. I have only been here for 6 months. What to do?

Anyone have any opinions on Lewis Brisbois? I’m currently at a small insurance defense firm and LB is reaching out to encourage me to apply there. The pay is better than what I make now but I don’t think I want to continue doing insurance defense (I actually hate it) and LB seems to have a reputation as a bit of a typical ID sweatshop. Can somebody pls explain this to me: if somebody has a medical emergency and needs to use short term disability, the firm says they need to pay for all of their other benefits at the full rate, not the employee discounted rate, so like $400 for health insurance instead of $100. Do they ever reimburse this money or is this the terrible setup they have if you need to use your disability benefits? I feel like I'm missing something.

ID Associates…how the hell do you reach your billable requirements? Just started at an ID firm and am lost as to how it’s possible when there is so much daily grind type work that you cannot bill for. Someone enlighten me.

Today I received an email from our employee asking if she can work the following schedule for the month of Jan: two week 3 days on, two off and then another two 2 days on, 3 off. Looked to exit prosecution work into a different field. Felt like I didn’t want to practice law anymore and was burnt out. Wanted to do something corporate with a lot of advancement opportunities. Started looking at contract negotiation and contract drafting for major defense contractors. A lot of opportunities out there. Just got a job at Collins Aerospace.

So I’ve found a startup I want to work for. They hired a CLO earlier this year. Is it crazy to try to reach out to him and express interest if they have no legal job postings? FWIW I have good experience and am at a well regarded firm.
