Ivy league fishes. If I am already close to hitting Manager in Consulting (target year ‘22), does it make sense to get an MBA from an IVY? Does it impact comp in any manner? I already have an MS and curious to hear what you all think after earning your MBA?

MBAs are overrated. Once you are already in consulting, it won’t matter.

No… just switch firms

Haha such simple advise with so much wisdom. Thanks for confirming a thought in my brain.

It depends on why you want to get an MBA. If it’s purely to boost your comp then it’s not worth it. You’ll hit a base of ~180 in next couple of years with a sizable bonus component. If you leave for a full time MBA then you’ll stop your income and get into debt. If you want to get an MBA for the knowledge (or prestige) I’d say go for it, you will earn enough later. You’ll get to explore industries outside consulting, network with future execs at different companies. There is a third option, opt for an executive MBA. Get your firm to pay for it, gain management knowledge without having to stop your income.

Would also just add that there’s a big difference between tiers of Ivy League B Schools. Harvard, Wharton, and then Columbia are levels ahead of say Cornell or Yale in terms of prestige. Nothing wrong with those schools just know what you’re getting into.

Not worth it if you are already at that salary point and already in consulting. I did it to double my salary and do a total career change and some days I wonder if I really needed to take on so much debt to get here. Honestly my most valuable gain from MBA was the network and open doors, BUT you can establish those connections in so many other ways. And I went to an M7 school FWIW.

Work for another year and think about it.

What to think is my question? If harvard or wharton median salary is $150k is it worth it to take over the debt? I already make close to $150

Thanks ZS1. I am in the middle of option one and two. I know it won’t boost pay. But I want it for prestige. It also makes me think if “prestige” is a good enough reason. I guess I have some deep thinking to do. Thanks for your advice.

Apologies for the dumb question but what exactly does partner mean in today’s world? In olden times it would have meant you were a partial owner right? Does it still? Or does it just mean extra highly paid employee with a lot of leadership responsibilities? We don’t use the term at Accenture of course since we’re public, but I’m curious what it really means at b4 or MBB, beyond just extra high paychecks? Are there actual partner benefits, like owning private shares of the company?
