Hey! I’m a new JOAN. I’ve been there a couple months and very nearly didn’t take the job because of the stuff people wrote about it on this app. I’m so so so glad I took the job. I’ll say a few things. 1) We are like 30 people and this is the biggest we have ever been. That is tiny. So the fact everyone on here seems to think they know something about JOAN when so few have actually been there makes me think it’s more of a meme at this point than a reality. 2) We have had a ton of turnover. Like half the agency is new since COVID. So perhaps things have just changed? Founders have been honest about the fact they spent some time finding their legs in the first couple years of having the agency, so it could have been a different place in the past. But as of now the people they’ve assembled are wonderful. My experience so far: 1) Good clients who trust us and come in wanting to do creative work. I’ve been at other agencies with this and other agencies without this. It is so hugely important and saves you a ton of work pushing clients down the road. 2) People who genuinely seem to like each other and not in a fake-nice way. 3) Reasonable hours. They actively encourage us to log off by 6:30. 4) Jaime and Lisa are both extremely caring people and very approachable. Lots of collaboration vs. top down dictates. I realize this is a very shilly sounding post, but I really don’t think most people from JOAN are even on fishbowl and like I said I was super close to not taking the job due to the rep on this app, so I just want to make sure people know (from someone who actually works there right now) that some people love it.

✋ wonder who you are…

Lots of “I’ve heards” about Joan. Always take that with a grain of salt. It’s a startup agency. They aren’t going to have everything as figured out as WK or Droga. And “control issues” can be describing owners trying to ensure some famous work leaves the agency while also juggling the operations of the company. It’s very possible and understandable this place isn’t for you at this point in time. But if you’re ok with the above, it may provide massive opportunities for career growth if you commit to the mission and the process. Fishbowl is full of advertisers who hate advertising; in many cases, with good reason. However, the consensus is that all is lost and we can’t improve it. There is no community here, no desire to see the young indie agencies do well and change what is rotten in the industry. Whether it’s Joan, Gut, Preacher, Bakery, Mischief; the overwhelming response here is to tear them down without ever giving them a chance. Due to the small size and age of these agencies, it’s clear that most of these complaints aren’t coming from former employees. They’re coming from advertisers who hate advertising who see a young new target to take their frustrations out on. I don’t know the Joan founders and I have never worked at Joan, but I do prefer smaller indie agencies and understand what I’m jumping into when I take a gig at one. My recommendation: take the Joan interview; feel it out; if it makes sense, take the gig; if it’s not for you, interview somewhere else and leave. If you do end up working there for over 6 months, come back here and tell us what you thought.

I’m a female at Bakery and I’ve been here for over 2 years. I’ve been promoted into leadership. We are a majority female agency. That I’m aware, nobody has been treated with anything but respect and professionalism from our team. I take accusations like the ones here very seriously and would welcome anyone with a legitimate grievance to contact me with their story. Jacqueline@bakery.agency

Do some digging in the search feature and you’ll see a huge consensus is that they’re a pretty toxic place. I don’t have first hand experience with them, but I’ve seen and heard enough about that culture where I’d be hesitant to take a role there.

Thanks! I have but lots of the stuff I’ve seen is old, like 52 weeks ago or more. So for a second I thought they changed or improved, restructured etc. Guess not!

Elaborating more from friends who have worked there it is beyond sweatshop level work to create absolutely nothing. You will barely sleep or see loved ones and family to make nothing.

I know exactly three people who have worked there, one friend and two acquaintances. The one friend hated it as much as I’ve ever seen anyone hate an agency. The other two politely told me they didn’t love the culture and that’s why they left.

Savvy agency positioning especially with the timing of the agency launch, but what have they made? A gummy bear spot and some pro-bono side projects and….. that’s it. It’s a no go from what I’ve heard.

Haven’t seen much work from them that I’m jealous of. But yet they’re treated like a top creative agency. 🤷‍♂️

They put an op ed style piece in the photography annual of CA so I’d say they’re aware of their reputation

Additional Posts

Back on the market and I’m coming to find two things: 1. Less desirable agencies are the ones who want people back on-site soon, with no wiggle room for remote work. 2. These same agencies want to pay salaries based on COL in the city where the agency is based even if you’re working/living from another market in the interim. Example: Midwest based agency paying Midwest salaries to folks living in places like NY, SF, LA. 🧐🧐🧐🧐

Has anyone received/know of a HireVue request from Accenture (Federal) with the title "Introduce Yourself" under the Job Title portion? Nearly a month ago I applied to a role (with a referral) and around six months ago I had applied to another role, which is why I was curious on which role this would be in reference to. I'm also just wondering if this is a "serious" screening interview or something HR uses to keep on file (just so I can prepare accordingly). Thanks!

I’ve been at a startup for a month now. I’m pretty certain my co-manager has been purposely withholding information from me when I ask for clarity on a process or general company information. Other than that, I like my role and company so far. What’s the best way to approach a situation like this? Pretty certain it’s because of insecurity and wanting to look better but I really am not a fan of these antics and it makes me question how long I want to stay here.
