Johannes Leonardo... what’s the good, bad, the ugly? Who are some of their clients? Don’t know much about their firm but interested to learn more!

Jan and Leo (especially leo) are control freaks and pretty much make every project about themselves. Their egos are way too big and they go over every creatives heads even the CDs. You may get a lot of work produced during you time there but none of it you’ll feel like you had real ownership of it and you’ll work crazy insane hours to do it.

Sounds a lot like most of the other agencies started by creatives.

They made a campaign for sprite that I thought was hilarious when I was in portfolio school. So I tried to emulate it in my career in hopes of getting a job there. When I finally got a chance to interview, they told the recruiter that my sense of humor was too “Americana” and they gave me a hard pass. I also know that they won’t let anyone present work to clients unless they’re CD or higher. And if you’re a mid level female creative, good luck saying anything that they’ll take seriously in any type of internal meeting at all.

Did they really say “ hard pass” if so, that’s rude. I mean, it’s bad enough to subject yourself to rejection they have to add degrees of it? We can be so unnecessarily unkind to each other.

First, I will give you the stock response of: googling them will tell you more than this app. Also there are a bunch of threads on here about them. But the short summary of them is, they’re a semi-independent agency known for doing trendy, art-direction-heavy work. Adidas Originals, Gap and VolksWagen are their most notable clients. It’s a good place to go to make good work. That being said, they are by far the worst sweatshop agency in the city, so most people are in and out within a year or two when they burn out.

Also one small tip re: nomenclature - they are an agency, not a firm. Absolutely zero judgment from me, just wanted to give you that tip in the event you speak with anyone there. When agency folks hear someone call them firms they assume the person doesn’t know the industry well. It’s messed up, I know. But the optics are shockingly important in advertising.

Is JLs work good? It’s probably the most overrated shop in NYC, sure they’ve made a couple of decent things but they’re not consistently putting out good work year after year, unlike D5 or BBDO. Like ACD1 said, it’s more style of substance and their campaigns lack big, simple thinking. But don’t take my word for it, see for yourself. Maybe their stuff floats your boat.

Same for a lot of agencies. Look at any award show and most of the winners are non profit or vanity clients that pay very little in agency fees.

Know nothing about them, but damn that name is pretentious.

funny

Stylish but ultimately mediocre work that feels like ideas run through google translate a couple of times. Like a better sid lee I guess. It’s not worth the sweatshop unlike say droga

Their work were better when they were smaller. Less ground breaking these days, but still able to execute them better than many other shops. One don’t simply walk into JL. People do get burnt out easily but JL is a quality stamp on your CV if you could get in.

Hi all - I’m working as a Jr AE at a remote agency. Before full-time at this agency, I interned there for 2 years and often did pro-bono work. I love my company so much, but I often feel stuck when it comes to salary and growth. The salary is minimum wage and every time I ask about a raise they agree I need one but never get around to it. Today, I was offered a position at another agency as a remote AE with more than double my current salary. I didn’t seek this job out but don’t know what to do.

Throughout my career, I have worked at both “traditional” and “digital” shops. My current agency would fall under traditional but also offers digital services. Our process, roles and skillsets seem way outdated but I wasn’t sure if it was just my opinion or if this is just how it works. For example, we have no CTO or tech leads. Our digital producers feel more like project managers than actual producers. Account Management is just traditional, no real digital knowledge. Feels layered and dated.

With the new 2 deadlines for intern/FT recruiting at MBB; out of curiosity, is there a significant difference in terms of competitiveness for each deadline? I plan to apply for the 2022 internships for the Sept deadline, and have heard that the Fall cycle will be significantly more competitive due to the lower number of spots available after the first cycle.
