Joined IBM last year 3Q as a Band D executive. I didn’t receive AIP as I was told that I was a new executive with no signings or revenue. I see the executive compensation letter that came out last week where it mentions that for those in business units and shared services, it’s 50% IBM performance and 50% business unit performance. A couple questions: 1. How do individual metrics factor into this equation? 2. Is it common for new execs to not get a prorated bonus?

Isn’t this a question that HR or your boss can answer with great clarity? It sound there is a formula and policy, both deterministic. You may have had a “target” comp for the first year that either eliminated or minimized the impact of other factors, given you would have less influence on performance until you achieve sufficient traction.

+1 to BCG. Not sure why you would get better answers here than what your org / seniors would . Your offer / contract should ideally mention your first performance review cycle.

This is a straightforward question that anyone in HR or an existing partner can help you with inside IBM .

As a partner, I never had a problem getting whatever info I need from HR .

Everything is explained in your Annual Incentive Letter and on the Consulting Careers page. As a Band D, your AIP target is 35% of base salary. At the end of the year there will be a score for both IBM and for Consulting expressed as percentages (typically 65-85% but last year was way better). That combined score is then used to scale the individual targets in that unit (so if the score is 80% then AIP is 28%). Then that number can be further scaled for you as an individual based on individual performance up to I think 200%, but also down. No idea on eligibility for joining in Q3, there is a cutoff date but I don't know what it is.

Thanks for the replies! I need to realize that I came to a more transparent organization vs. my old companies. Very often, what was communicated wasn’t enacted. There was a lot of “unwritten rules”. Once learning these in the other orgs, you will know how to better operate. My plan was to discuss with my coach but always curious what perspectives others on here may provide.

Oy, IBM is more transparent than your last place? Did you previously work in the intelligence community?

Has anyone ever been leveled down after reaching offer committee? I was told that I interviewed strongly and was being placed at L6 but once I was presented before the committee their feedback was that since 1 of the interviewers didn’t ask specific questions of me that they’d expect for L6 - I could either proceed as L5 or conduct 2 additional interviews to still be evaluated at L6. I doubt it's required at most firms but I'm a pretty senior staff and when I speak with Partners, they seem to speak with an MBA level of business knowledge which extends past their technical skillset.

I feel a little crazy saying this, but more money at this point doesn’t resonate. I see a ton of exit planning and boomerang threads here, but I’d take a 50% pay cut (or a 50% raise) for an exciting role. That’s totally privilege talking, but I just can’t imagine chasing extra money in PE or lateraling just for the money. No virtue signaling here at all. I’ve been asked to serve as chair for a non-profit. I don’t have time and this is a dysfunctional board (many board members with a tie to the mission of the organization but w/o relevant experience). However, there aren’t many options and I feel obligated. I’m considering it, *if* I can put some guardrails in place to minimize the dysfunction and stay out of the weeds. That’s a huge if.
