Juneteenth is approaching and I was really hoping to allow myself to take a break to be present in joy but even though my firm’s offices are closed, it seems like people still want to hold meetings and set Friday deadlines. Anyone have tips for setting/enforcing this boundary? Or do I just have to give in to the capitalism?

Probably too late for this year, but next year I’d plan in advance. Block off your calendar, tell your practice group and any other teams that you’ll be unavailable that day and why, and plan on not doing any work, but still letting people know that if they have an emergency they can call you.

It was a challenge, but there were a small number of Jewish attorneys at my firm who needed to set boundaries for certain Jewish holidays not widely recognized by the firm who basically did the above each time and it worked out fine. But if you’re trying to get time off at the last minute, people won’t appreciate the lack of professionalism and it doesn’t help the cause of POC.

🤨 huh?

Wait…your office is observing it on Friday even though it falls on Saturday this year?!

Lucky!!

Unfortunately it starts from the top. If your firm management or even practice group heads do not respect it and do not tell the other partners the importance of respecting the day, then the day will be business as usual. And this may take pressure from the bottom by associates (including importantly white associates) educating the powers that be of the importance of the day. And nonblack associates need to support their black colleagues by making a point to not work that day either, so their black colleagues do not feel pressure to work.

Are these internal meetings and deadlines? Does the firm usually schedule deadlines and meetings when the office is closed? I think you should look into whatever the policy is around working on the holidays when the firm is closed to help guide your response.

Yup, internal

I’m a bit confused. If your firm is closed, why are you expected to attend meetings and make deadlines?

Wow….I’m speechless. I would leave your firm. That’s not work-life balance. It better be something extremely important if you’re expecting me to work on a day off.

I was told by management they see me in a more supervisory role at my first year review and during meetings. My second year review comes and there’s no talk about a promotion - instead it says “we can’t wait to see her excel“ and my raise and increase were the same as the prior year. I know I deserved more of an increase this year. I mentioned to my manager about the promotion and was told she will bring it up in a meeting. Three months later and I haven’t heard anything. Any advice?

Whoever said employers don’t care about grades and transcripts after your first job was a liar. Every lateral position that I’ve applied to as a 3rd year has requested transcripts. Why do we lie and tell grads that employers don’t check transcripts when they do. My coworker, a 5th yr, had to submit his transcripts also to lateral job. Side note - it speaks volume when multiple associates are trying to lateral at the same time

Curious if anyone is taking time off this month to see family. I'm crazy busy and it'd honestly be easier for me to wait until Christmas, but my mothers almost insisting I fly home this month. AITA for wanting to work through November and only see my family at Christmas?

A professor in college (over a decade ago) said this to our class, and I always repeat it on Juneteenth: “Abraham Lincoln did not free the slaves. The slaves freed themselves.” Hopefully more and more people continue to understand what that means.

Although this is an attorney bowl (or maybe because it is and I believe we are an intelligent bunch, both intellectually and emotionally speaking), I post this here in addition to the startup bowl: I am looking to start a clothing brand that either donates or invests a portion of profits in innovative companies started by diverse founders. This means at minimum, PoC and LGBTQ+. I welcome any thoughts on this from folks in this bowl and any ideas you may have that would make my idea better.

Okay so I’m a newly licensed attorney in a very conservative part of TX. I just got my first job offer and I was worried at first thinking that I was in “Trump” territory, but I tested the waters in my interview and spoke about police injustices and how prosecutor’s job is not only to protect victims, but also defendants from police injustices. I have to let them know by tomorrow, but thoughts on if this is a good career move for someone who wants to work in transactional work-RE or Bankruptcy?

How's everyone doing? I was on social media today and reading about the Adam Toledo video and it took me back to last June, which on top of the pain from seeing this racist system continue to win out, June was my lowest billing month and hurt my confidence about hitting hours compared to my white peers.

How are other people dealing with 1) trauma of another racist murder by cops and 2) impact on work? I am not black, so my pain does not compare but I can't act like things are fine either...
