Junior Dev presents an issue they’re having. I hint to the fact that it may be framework related (this is a very simple fix). The questions they are asking seem out of context, so I ask if they have done any framework related research generally, as our entire application is built on top of this. They answered no, they have been here for months, and it’s not like this wasn’t in the job description. Am I missing something here? Trying to be helpful but stuff like this is frustrating.

Very common in junior devs. I consider this a coaching opportunity, one on one. Sometimes they just don't know what to do, what to search for, or where to start. This is your opportunity to help them get better.

Also, forgot to add, I don't hint at junior devs. One of the reasons they are junior is that they need your explicit guidance. Be clear, very very clear, on what they need to do. Tell them "It's probably the framework, start there, look at XYZ and get back to me tomorrow". Hopefully they grow fast and don't need as much attention. If they don't, that's a different discussion.

Have you successfully couched a junior developer before and they became senior?

Is this case an exception to others you’ve couched before?

Because you honestly sound like someone who should take a couching training. Sorry to be blunt. You’ll understand stand me a few years from now.
Good luck.

Becoming a senior is entirely up to one’s self, which is my whole point. All the coaching in the world will not help you if you don’t do the work for yourself, and when I ask about what work is being done to close that gap, I am met with nothing.

Normally this wouldn’t be a problem I’m just overwhelmed by the frequency in which this happens generally, not even specific to a person. Just seems like people aren’t doing a lot to help themselves aside from asking someone. So that means if I’m not there to explain the work just doesn’t get done or even progress.

If the initial response was “I looked at the documentation and didn’t understand ___” I wouldn’t have posted this.

Some flavor of this happens everyday. My question becomes, we are paying you boatloads of money, you have all of the tools you need: At what point do you start trying to help yourself and connect your own dots? Your job is problem solving. This is a problem, how are you going to solve it? What are the first steps you would take? I am trying to help establish a good foundation but I cannot explain every single concept lol just not possible.

Also Google exists.

If they are consistently underperforming despite your coaching it's time to start a discussion with their manager. Maybe time for a PIP or other type of intervention (this would be the manager responsibility). Worse case, if the manager isn't a help, is to give them limited work that's inline with their skills/drive. I can sympathize, I have been there before, do the best you can.

Some (many really) people just aren't cut out to be SW devs.

One thing I’ve noticed about our junior devs is that they don’t have the self-motivation to do these kinds of things. They’re either reluctant, scared, timid. Most need a lot of hand holding and we must give lots and lots of direction.

We’ve been doing pair programming, code review, and mentoring. We grill them during stand-ups and retrospects. We PIP after 12 months.

How do you advocate for a "level" promotion in a company that has vague unofficial descriptions of levels? I'm doing L4-5 (on standard levels, or L3 within our system) work but can't get away from the unofficial "L2".

Making 140k with 7 yrs experience in this role, and 12 prior years experience in Systems Engineering roles. I know someone on my team is at 180k with a similar career.

Fighting with my manager atm on definitions of levels and feel like its a red herring.

I’m a mid level engineer and my team is overwhelmed. There’s more work than we can complete in the timelines that leadership/product has committed to, which is causing leadership to override technical decisions seemingly to meet those deadlines. An example would be routing all live traffic to a feature which was not fully tested, instead of waiting until testing is complete or having that change be dormant and the feature enabled later. Has anyone dealt with this type of issue?

I just got a job offer for an Entry Level Software Engineer at Boeing in Saint Louis. The salary is $82,000 with an $8,000 sign on bonus. I was hoping for an offer closer to 90k base and I don’t care too much for a sign on bonus. However, this is a lot more than what I’m making now, and would be my first SWE job. Should I counter? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!

Question : What are the best bootcamps recognised by employers in the field?

I am just making a career change from retail to software engineering. I want to progress as quickly as I can, so i have looked at bootcamps. 12 week course and they help you with your cvs and i presume put you in contact with recruiting companies? The one i am working with has already let me down several times with their communication on what's expected. Its a lot of money to put up, but want a structure to work to.

How do you feel about your job? Either your current position right now or your general role as a SWE - do you genuinely enjoy it and have a passion for it, tolerate it and collect the paycheck, or hate it? Does the industry you’re in have an impact on your answer - e.g. FAANG vs. fintech vs. ed tech? Personally after switching companies I’ve gone from hating to tolerance, but I feel like I’m never going to be excited about what I’m doing.

Hi all! What are the differences between senior/staff SWE and software architects? Are architects still a thing? I'm causally searching for a new position (my job had a 50% layoff last month and the survivability of the company is sketchy) and I've noticed senior and staff SWE roles sound like they have a lot of architectural designing and leadership responsibilities while not focusing on coding as much. Is this normal? I love mentoring, but I also don't wanna be in meetings all day. 😕
