How long do conflict checks usually take?
This definitely depends on the type of business/work you do and how much of it requires your hands-on input or involvement on a daily/weekly basis. If the team you'd be leaving can continue to steer the ship so to speak, it may be hard for you to get clients to follow you (clients love sticking with what they know). Plus you may have some type of non-compete or external limitation. But if you're good at what you do, new business/clients will come- so it also depends on your and on the expectations the new firm would have for you.
This is tricky. You need to "prep" clients or at least performed a certain amount of due diligence with a portion of your client base to get a read on who would be likely to 'follow you'. This also depends on your industry/focus area and any advantages the new firm would offer- will it have more experts in your space? Better resources to serve the clients? If you have close client relationships, you might be able to assess how much of their relationship is with you individually vs. a dependency on your current firm (do they also work closely with other partners/a larger team or is the relationship more closely tied to you).
May I ask why you’re thinking of lateraling? The pressure as a junior partner is high for sure (100% #overwhelmed) but the grass is not always greener, despite what you’re promised by another firm. The pressure won’t go away- you’ll have to prove yourself in different ways.
You're not always going to have better work life balance but it is possible. If and when you start your search make sure to talk to other partners at the firm to really understand if what you're getting is better.
