Just a friendly reminder to all our account friends that you work for your agency, not your client.

There's a good example of the old advertising/new advertising struggle. The old way (aka the way folks might say it's "supposed" to be) is the Account folks work for the agency, and it's their job to sell the work.

There was a lot more in person schmoozing then--golf games, strip clubs, expense accounts, dinners. The idea was the ad agency had a product, the client was paying for it, and the Account person represented and advocated the AGENCY to the CLIENT in the service of making the client comfortable with the idea they were spending their money the best (and most fun) way possible.

Now, today, @ACD1 is much closer to what's happening, where the Account person----with zero expense account, zero travel and almost entirely through email, rarely in person----presents the client's "feedback" at the agency, in the service of spending as little money as possible (and many would say having as little fun as possible).

The idea that ad agencies have a product--a voice--is over. We are making what the client wants to make.

Anyway OP Im on your side, for what it's worth-- which is basically nothing--in 2018. But I remember, I remember.

A CCO recently said to me, if clients aren't asking for you by name, that's a problem... and that is exactly how George Lois saw it in his day as well... Most of the time clients should be in the rooms with competent creatives and accounts should be taking minutes and keeping creative within the lines.

Accounts are damned good at playing both sides of the fence. That said, there are stellar account people out there. Usually about 2 per agency at best, and usually reserved for new business.

But most of the other ones silo off access and are playing interpretive dance to explain things they really should have had the creatives in the room to hear. Agencies loose millions on account people getting in the way, and clients are loosing their shit at the fees being thrown at them for 10 account people on a project with 3 creatives. Accounts hold the purse, and fill their group's pockets first. I know that's harsh, but it is also true.

And now we are stuck in a situation where agencies are dumping creatives by the hundreds, and doubling down on a system with 10 layers of accounts, an ECD, a PM and a list of production houses to farm shit to.

How the fux long do you think it is before the clients just drop this system and go direct to talent and production, or do that P&G system where they pull from 10 agencies for their dream team and cut out accounts completely. They really can't be so blind. They're driving this car right off a cliff.

A friendly reminder to @OP AD and all other creatives: your job wouldn’t exist without account making sure the clients are happy and keep paying the bills. Enjoy your day off 🇺🇸, better keep hitting those deadlines when you get back!

likesmarthelpful

Their job is to advocate for the client, so sometimes unfortunately it can feel like they aren’t on your side. But it’s all good, we need a three-sided balance for a successful project:

CD advocates for quality of creative
PM / Producer advocates for time / cost
Account advocates for wants / needs of client

likesmart

At OP - just a friendly reminder that account people are your coworkers and to treat them with mutual respect and as part of the team! Happy 4th!

I’m assuming this complaint is about as original as your work

likefunny

@Edelman your job wouldn’t exist if you had nothing worth buying to sell, keep it co-operative here dude/ette

likeuplifting

Yeah @Edelman in theory none of us have jobs without each other.

And in practice, Creatives could be replaced by google and Account people could be replaced by the email forward button. So let's not get up on a high horse shall we?

like

Creative 1 – we work in sales. Sometimes a customer needs a safe car, but wants a red car, so we find them a safe red car. And they’re happy for it, and come back again as a result. That’s a key part of a good account person – realizing both what the client wants and needs.

Non-car analogy: they need to increase sales 10%. But they want a video they can show off at their next sales meeting. To keep the client happy and the money flowing, we have to understand both.

like

ACD1, I hope to work with you some day. In desperate need of teammates who understand how business and the ad business in particular works.

OP, thanks for the divisive cliche of a post we have to endure every week at least once on here. Cheers and I hope you get to work with good account and other people as well as actually take an interest in their jobs/responsibilities beyond parroting back what you heard from the "cool" creatives who wouldn't last 24 hours doing account work.

likeuplifting

The above balance sucks sometimes, but it’s key to running a successful creative business.

like

@ACD1 - you’re right re: balance, but I’d argue “wants of client” and “needs of client” are very different, and this is what separates good account people from the rest. They are able to see what clients need (vs just what they’re asking for) and work with cds to push for that. And often they’re just as invested in the work.

like

Also dumb and divisive - OP’s last part about selling great creative work. Yep, that is key, but if you think it’s great but you can’t convince your internal team that it’s great, it may not be as great as you think. And if you think they’re all idiots, then you 100% should leave that team and prob your agency bc it’s never gonna work.

likesmart

“Account people suck.”? What are you ECD1, a 3 year old? Your post lacks any and all sophistication, maturity, and yes, creativity. How embarrassing that someone like you has that title. Grow up.

like

@freelance1 nothing about this post is cooperative. If the idea OP came up with had been sold through with excellent account support, we wouldn’t be seeing a “partnership was great, awesome team win” post. This is like account reminding creative that we’re solving client problems, not partnering on personal art projects. No one finds it helpful...

like

ECD1, what on earth? That sucks that you’re that high up with that attitude. And the AAEs... think about trying to help them to grow. You’re a leader in your agency and should invest time in that.

like

without account, work is difficult. without creative, there is no work.

like

Like I’ve told any account person I’ve ever mentored; two key things you need to be and in this order: 1) Be a frustrated creative. If you don’t love seeing creative come to life or want to help make it better, find another job. 2) Be curious about your clients’ business.

like

I gotta admit account people have really become order takers for the clients across the board at my shop. They don’t see themselves as sales people and they never involve our strategists. It’s horrible. They just keep regurgitating the same deck of tactics to everyone. It’s sad when you have to fight everyday for work to be on strategy as well as having it be good creatively

like

@EP1 absolutely. Just like a good creative hits deadlines, works within constraints, and listens to a clients goals. But if everyone’s job was solely creative, we’d have trouble keeping the lights on.

(That being said, I think a producer is much more responsible for the quality of work than a PM, sorry for lumping the two together in a gross simplification.)

like

ECD1 that’s the spirit ... that’s the exact attitude and lack of professionalism that is rotting the foundation of our industry. I don’t blame you for that comment, but the idiots in management who allowed you to rise to that position, because no doubt you are a spreading your venom to those dumb enough to listen to you.

I joined a company 20 days back due to high ctc. However i am very disappointed with the project quality and day to day tasks.

I am not sure how to sail or accept work that i am doing. Had word with Senior Manager who said that they are judging on different tasks but certainly i am not having positive vibes about work.

Feel like putting down papers but again notice period is of two months during probation.

Shall i stay back for some more time or start looking for better option?
