Just a Wednesday rant: I turned 40 yesterday and realized I've wasted the prime of my life in consulting. I neglected fam, friends and my own emotional & spiritual needs owing to the adrenaline and stress of this space, and corporate tech in North America in general.

The realization hit me like a ton of bricks. I'm going to exit to something super low-key so I can finally start making some memories.

Rant over. Thank you for reading.

First of all happy birthday, and I’m stressing the happy part because you should enjoy it. And I’m glad that your eyes are opened but you haven’t ruined or wasted your life. You have a full and happy life ahead of you and you can do anything you choose. You’re obviously well educated, have family and friends in your life so you’re ahead of the game. I was in a miserable marriage, got divorced, wasn’t doing well emotionally and I turned 40! I met the love of my life and life started over again for me. Now that I’m 50 I’ve had a very Happy 10 years, happier than the 40 years before and I love my job, I love every single day waking up and I enjoy every minute. It’s really not about the 40 years that’s how you spend today, and the day after. Great things are going to happen for you because it appears that you have decided to make yourself a priority in your own life. Bravo

I'm 26 and realized at the end of last year that I was wasting my life on consulting work and dealing with sexism at work on a regular basis
I've been working at a lower key but still interesting job for 4 months so far and I love it. I have more energy for everything and have picked up hobbies that fulfill me. I was worried about slowing down my career but the balance I have now is so worth it. Just sharing in case anyone else is scared to nake the leap from consulting to industry.

We need more boomers to start feeling this way so we can shift to a 30 hour work week😁
Happy birthday 🎉

Definitely a millennial tf, 1980 onward. Our cut off should be 93 max though. But I can’t wait for those annoying boomers to finally retire and not come back as advisors or fake consultants.

Director 1 - you made partner by 33? Congrats!! Why on earth would you regret that?! You do realize that you have achieved financial security for your family and earned enough to provide a life of privilege for your children, early and didn’t even have to spend all your middle age to do that, right? I would feel ecstatic if I were you and wouldn’t have even minded missing out on a few baby steps and kiddo pictures but then again you must excuse me because I come from an Asian background where there is every expectation that parents must literally slog. Yeah….not exaggerating either. Nevertheless, I do absolutely see your point too.

The good news is that you've realized this relatively young and now you're in a place to make life changes. All the work you did was to take care of your family and make yourself financially secure. You should be able to pivot and enjoy life more through retirement. Congratulations!

Thank you! That was an incredibly kind comment

Happy belated birthday! Better to realize all of that now rather than later - it sounds like you’re making the right moves to make the rest of your years the best of your years 🎉

Don't let consulting kool-aid cloud your judgment. You can BOTH earn more and work less. Come join a company in the Bay. I did it.

Yes. But more so in sales and customer success as those are region specific. So living in Seattle would mean you report to the Pacific Northwest region manager for example.
Also, I should clarify, this is a mature startup with an older demographic ready to go IPO in the next few years, not a younger demographic series C.

Do it!

I just did this right before my 37th birthday.

No regrets at all.

I ended up in a strategy role at a public FinTech. It wasn't the highest paying exit opportunity I had, but it's by far the best WLB. It's 100% remote, I don't usually work a full 8 hours, and the culture is kinda, "Let's do good work, but we're not curing cancer, so no reason to push ourselves that hard."

Anthony Bourdains life really kicked off around 46 for him… he said up until then he felt like he had shade over his eyes

Yea I’m pretty sure bourdain was high for a lot of those early years. Can’t really say this is analogous

I’ll be 40 in January and am feeling this right now. I’d love to spend more time with my kids as they grow up…like be able to go to school events, games, etc.

It’s too bad you haven’t been able to do these important things while at your current job. There are companies out there that value family and the whole person, so you don’t need to give it all up (career), just maybe find a different industry to work in.
