Thanks for this OP. The amount of people in that other post that sound like they have never heard of systemic racism is genuinely (and i mean genuinely) concerning. (When i say systemic racism, i dont mean the popular culture catch phrase, if not already familiar please do not just break down the definitions of the words and think you know what it means, please look up the specific economic and political processes that are implicated in systemic racism and how they work.)

Shocking, truly - colleges recruit students who will, directly or indirectly, contribute to top line. Athletes and legacies bring REVENUE, people, it's not THAT hard. Alienate wealthy donors watch Ivies turn into a D-list state school.

likefunny

I grew up pretty poor and went to a (non-Harvard) Ivy. I guess I was one of the "smart" ones since I was neither legacy nor an athlete. Since then I've learned that's just how life is so might as well embrace it/accept it/use it to your advantage/etc. 🤷

Can we all just agree that capitalism has had its day and it's time to move on?

likefunnysmart

Yeah, I get it, I just don't think it's remotely silly. Capitalism isn't my ideal. But I can't make America less capitalist. I've got kids to feed and take care of. I'm not going to handicap their futures because of philosophical preference. What if my kids think capitalism is great? Why would I want to limit their options? If I actually could snap my fingers and change our economy to more equitable, but in the process lost my accumulated advantage, I'd do it without hesitation. But since that's not really an option, l can't really change that. So yeah, in the meantime,"Wheeeeeeeee!" And see if I can't change a few perspectives along the way. America could be a lot better and so could our society.

Yeah, no. It’s a brutish tool that *attempts* to balance the scale based on thinking from the 60’s. Instead, it heavily benefits white women and penalizes Asian Americans while failing for half a century to achieve its primary goal.

1) Still waiting on you to provide an answer here since you claimed to have numbers. 2) https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/retropolis/wp/2018/09/14/before-asian-americans-sued-harvard-the-school-tried-restricting-the-number-of-jews/ 3) https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2018/10/19/acceptance-rates-by-race/ 4) Self-evident. 5) https://equitablegrowth.org/how-data-disaggregation-matters-for-asian-americans-and-pacific-islanders/ —- These receipts aren’t for you OP because judging by the stroke you had halfway through your response and your frightening lack of logic throughout, I don’t believe you have the capacity to reason. For others who stumble across this dumpster fire feel free to educate yourselves. Also, if you’re going make an appeal to authority, I wouldn’t pick the one that once upheld slavery, separate but equal, and Japanese internment. Legality is not morality.

After reading the comments on this post made by OP, my conclusion is that OP just really hates Asians

What % of non-whites would’ve been rejected had it not been for affirmative action? I’m Asian by the way and I know my race is a disadvantage for college admissions.

like

A few points. I'm by no means advocating for an SAT-only approach since that's really flawed. The authors of the study are clearly twisting the interpretation of the results. 1. "Overall, in a test-only admissions system, Asian American college applicants would gain a total of fewer than 3,000 seats at the most selective colleges, compared to the nearly 14,500 seats they typically capture in an admissions year." --> that's ~20% gain 2. "In a test-only admissions system, 21% of Asian American students and 39% of non–Asian American students would lose their seats in the most selective colleges to students with higher test scores." --> that means these 39% non-Asian American students got into these selective colleges for reasons other than their test scores, compared to 21% of Asians. 3. The study points out that given a certain SAT score, an Asian HS student is more likely to apply to more selective colleges (not surprising), but this is a base problem and doesn't negate #1 and #2 above. The study posed the question - "are Asians more likely to get rejected by elite universities?" Given #3 above, the answer is obviously (and rightfully) yes. But the key question is "controlling for test scores and other academic aptitude, are Asian students less likely to END UP in a selective school". Note in Table 1 of the study, the share of Asian students enrolled in top schools would increase from 12% to 14% (a 200-bps share gain and ~17% increase).

What’s the point of this post? To open discussion about affirmative action or to take a shot at BCG? If the latter, that’s a cheap shot.

While we’re talking about cheap shots… I’m going to leave this here 💊

Ok, but where do Asians fit in with that whole idea? Legacy and athletic scholarship Asians?

Intern1 I see no “posturing” from OP that would indicate “smart”

OP, you lost this one.

I like how being an athlete is always lumped in with legacy as if there is no work / effort involved in becoming one.

Nearly 60% of all incoming college freshman are women. Would you be in favor of affirmative action to balance that number so that there were more men? Curious

likesmart

Yes, as a woman I would be in favor of affirmative action to balance that number! There is no difference between men and women, and every human deserves a fair chance of getting into universities and hired by right employers!

That person does not represent us.

I’m a white male. My father was a janitor who didn’t graduate high school; my mother was a cashier. I’m the first in my family to attend college. I attended a top university, but certainly didn’t benefit from either legacy or race-based preferences (though there was probably a soft benefit from my application essay, where I discussed my socio-economic background). If it’s really about leveling the playing field in light of legacy admission preferences, seems like someone like me should benefit. Instead, the people I met who benefitted from race-based preferences were the children of doctors and college professors.

K1, There is data to support what you're saying, but it would take me some time to find it. The two are highly correlated, but when isolated, income is a far big factor than family structure. Admittedly, I'm going off of memory, so obviously I could be remembering inaccurately.

Doesn’t say anything about their academic qualifications, since they would have just been rejected for another top academically achieving/athlete/dean interest list student. If I am wrong please share some data on average SAT scores & GPAs on these different groups, happy to be proved wrong .

like

In a potentially unethical ways yes you can achieve equality of outcome.

Academic institutions shouldn’t recruit athletes. I’m okay with everyone else on that list though— they benefit the school.

Athletes also benefit the school by bringing in revenue.

I never applied to Harvard so I will never know. I did apply to BCG though.
