So.. is anyone reading what's happening with Trump's administration? This is not a post to spark a debate - am I the only person alarmed by these reports? http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_582b9516e4b0aa8910bd97a5 https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2016/11/15/conservative-think-tank-breaks-with-trump-in-describing-russian-threat/?tid=sm_tw

So you needed that to find out?
You all need to make friends with some teachers or artists or people who work in non-profits and get some perspective.
D12, I started my career in the military. This might shock you, but believe it or not... It's not always about the money. Some people actually do a job because the *gasp* care about making a difference more than they care about their bank account. Now eventually, get married and have a kid or too, and the vow of poverty doesn't seem so lovely anymore... but if I didn't need the cash? I probably never would have sold out and left a service-oriented career like the military or teaching.

The solution is to also marry a VP in tech.
You single?
Living in a house is pretty wow to me 😂

Think about what consulting in Big 4 actually even is. It's just a bunch of flim flam advice that generates obsequious and un-measurable value through business analytics that can concoct biased narratives to drive mediocre business decisions. Meanwhile tech is burning the candle at both ends to generate actual measurable KPIs like customer acquisitions, engagement, revenue per user, etc.
You might undervalue what we do a bit. Spending $1m on advice is a drop in the bucket vs potentially not catching a massive issue that sends a bunch of tech minions down a path to make the wrong widget and generate no value. That said, we’ve all ruined consulting by giving away all the IP. Except for interpretation of recent regulatory requirements or maybe complex finance arrangements, most “best practices” can be found on the web. Then again, a crap programmer but an excellent stack overflow user can crowdsource their job.
Forget all the implications around what your friend said and whether it’s rude (sure sounds like it)... but I left consulting making $240 all in. 4 years later I make 4-5x that, and am not a VP yet. You’re not “underpaid” in big 4/ consulting... but yes, tech pays a lot more (esp for those of us who don’t live in SF or NY). I could say I’m underpaid compared to PE/VC/law firm partners/investment bankers - but you keep going down that road and it doesn’t end until you’re Gates or Bezos.
SD1, would you be willing to have a phone chat to talk about your journey?
I mean, what do u make, 200? That’s peanuts in Silicon Valley. VPs can easily make 350 base with 5x that in stock each year
This whole conversation makes me want more money
Comparison is the thief of joy
As a former purchaser of services as well as a big4 alumni I actually think universally the industry over pays and over charges for SI work
Thanks K3.
I made $195k total comp at Deloitte as a manager in tech advisory and am now pushing close to $280k total comp at AMZN as a senior product manager working less hours with less complexity and stress - so yes, do the jump to tech (particularly FAANG) if you can.
Any advice, 2nd year here.
I called my good friend Bill Gates. He asked my salary and laughed when I told him. ☹️ why don’t I make as much as Bill Gates
His daughter is in med school. Can you imagine being her patient later on? Smart move on her part to be honest. She could eventually run her parents' organization after a few years of practicing medicine, especially if she gets to works for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

We could fire 50% of Big4 and the other 50% of us and India can take the difference. Would you prefer that?
Good luck with that..
Also want to stress how difficult it is to become a VP-level in big tech. The VP in my org is 2 levels away from Sundar. If he left Google, he’d probably qualify to become some C-level function of a mid-market company. Just to put that into perspective.

Be careful about comparing your salary to others. It can create a false sense of your true value in the market and where you live. Maybe you are paid what you are worth
Sounds like a bad friend
And Mark Zuckerberg owns an island and could buy the entire neighborhood just to flex on your friends “super important VP husband”. Random 15 year olds became billionaires from a few thousand in Bitcoin back in 2009.
Stop comparing. There’s always someone with more.

You all are actually insane. Stop comparing and enjoy the fact that we still make more than most of the US/world’s population. Life’s short and you probably are overpaid as it is. That includes your friend.
