Just cleared conflicts & can give notice to my current firm. New firm wants me to start on 12/5. Planning to give notice tomorrow, 2 weeks from which will be 11/22. Will be out of office for weekend trip Fri. 11/18 through Mon. 11/21 (unlimited vacation/not using PTO). Which is better (or less worse): Give 2 weeks notice that includes 2 days I’m paid but won’t be working, or give < 2 weeks notice, such that my last day is 11/17 (10 days notice)? I’m busy & will be until my last day regardless.
Is this an LSAT game?
Probably doesn’t matter. If they don’t want to pay you for the time off they’ll make your last day 11/17.
Thanks, I figured I’d present both options and let them choose. Have many friends and mentors at current firm and want to exit as gracefully/professionally as possible.
Take a longer vacation and start 2 weeks later. It’s the holidays.

You could try to give them the full two weeks and keep the vacation days as well (it’s on a weekend anyway), but they could cut you off prematurely, ask you to work the full notice period, or even ice you out and take you off your current matters right away such that it doesn’t even matter. I gave my last firm two weeks and by the last week I was off all of my matters and no one was talking to me, including my former supervising partners.

Probably shouldn't confirm start date at new firm till you give notice and negotiate end date at current firm

Lol I would politely but firmly say “no”. If they terminated me and I asked them if I could stay on longer they’d tell me to get fucked most likely. What do I gain from giving a firm I’m already leaving more time at my own expense?
I haven’t committed to a 12/5 or any other start date with the new firm. I generally agree with the proposition that I don’t need to negotiate an end date with the old firm. I’m just trying to be accommodating and professional.
Ask to start at new firm 12/12. Will give you a little cushion. Start dates are usually flexible
