Just curious how many single parent on this bowl ? I’m a single dad based in NY.

Could use some encouragement. I billed an enormous amount last month because things were on fire and I’m the baby of the firm so I got tagged in on a number tight, high pressure deadlines. Many, many 14+ hour billable days. Mind you, I’m a single mother with young kids. Today I got pulled aside for a chat about how some partners feel like I was running behind on some assignments (no deadlines were missed—some got pushed when new work was added).

Coming back from maternity leave and considering switching firms. Are there typical monetary implications or restrictions to switching? Do you need to be at firm for a certain amount of time prior to leaving to avoid having to pay anything back?

Anyone have any experience with high deductible insurance plans with a newborn? Trying to decided if I should add my newborn onto my HDHP (I've met my $2700 deductible through delivery but my baby will have his own $2700 deductible to meet). Alternatively I could add him to my spouses regular insurance with a lower deductible/higher premium.

I’m a single parent and mid-level associate, and have been struggling with the increased expectations from pandemic-level work. I do not have the luxury of a full-time nanny, maids or stay-at-home spouses like most of the partners I work with and the expectation that I be available 24/7 (and on zoom) is impossible to keep up with lately. Work was manageable pre-pandemic (and I really enjoyed it) but these new expectations seem unsustainable. Anyone else in the same boat? How are you managing?

My husband isn’t a great parent and he have a toddler. He means well but doesn’t know how to handle children . We have been thinking about a second child. Although I would love two children, I am not sure if I would be making a mistake since one child was certainly a lot to handle for us. I also don’t want to have my child miss out on having a sibling either.

How do you navigate the holidays, with or without kids? I tend to be pretty busy over the next 3-4 months and I always try to make as much time for family as I can, but it seems like it's never enough. My mother in law is pretty old fashioned and I can tell she thinks it's wrong that some nights I'm home late during the holiday season or when I work in downtimes during family holidays. My partner is incredibly supportive but I still feel some guilt over it.

I have the opportunity to work in house at a company I have been seconded at (with a team I love). I have only been in big law for 2.5 years. I am afraid of making a move before I have enough reps in deal work... and also artificially setting a ceiling on my pay and ability to be GC one day. I love corporate work but have never felt at home at my firm. Any advice on what to consider? Also I am expecting my first baby due in May!

Tried to join the running bowl, but it doesn't seem active/can't get in. Just needed somewhere to vent: my husband made me take down my marathon medals and put them in storage 3 years ago. Said they looked tacky. They were stored at my mother in laws. Just found out they got thrown out in a big house clean. It feels so trivial but I'm super bummed. Are bonuses typically prorated to account for paid parental leave? (Aka I took 3 months, so my bonus is 25% less)

FWIW, I am at a non-lockstep firm with a guaranteed bonus of a percentage of my salary if I meet my hours (plus discretionary), but would be interested in hearing from lockstep firms as well.

16 weeks and so worried all of the stress I’m under is going to hurt the baby. Between work, my own scary (non-pregnancy) health stuff, the pandemic, my mom (who is a widow and lives alone, basically isolated by choice due to covid) is having health issues, and pressures to keep billable hours up, I’ve been having complete breakdowns. Today I spent almost the entire day crying and now have to make up the billable time this weekend. I really worry abt what effect this will have on the babe.

What’s are some actually good baby/kids books?? Trying to find the sweet spot of length and plot / cuteness for bedtime. I’ll be honest I don’t like the “classics” 😶

Is anyone here against contraception and for natural family planning that can give their perspective? I’ve always imagined that I would use contraception in marriage but the stance of some churches are so opposed to it it makes me question it. I understand the argument it’s just very difficult for me to wrap my head around a marriage that doesn’t use it.

I have been with my company for almost 8 years. I wasn’t certified when I started but I have been now for about a year. It wasn’t required before. I learned that my coworker who has been with us less than a year and had no prior experience in healthcare makes very close to the same amount I do.
