Just curious. What would it take to organize a Union for creatives? Have we ever talked about it in this bowl?

No no no no no ..... This will be another reason brands will pull more work in-house. Unions only work when it’s a freelance industry. Otherwise it protects the lazy - good luck getting them fired. It works in Hollywood because the crew, actors, writers, directors, etc. are freelance and you’re only as good as your last gig. It weeds out the lazy because they won’t be hired for the next production. Where it helps the freelance community - the union their wages by setting the minimum (scale) they will work for and helps with the insurance and retirement (if they contribute enough)

Luck. It would take luck. So with that — good luck! You got this!👍

Thanks for your response, and please bear with me. Isn’t it true that we’re already only as good as our last job? I hear so much on this app about creatives getting let go, layoffs, shops closing, etc. In my very limited understanding of unions, couldn’t we—either the creatives or the agency—negotiate for some level of security? A client partnership for a year, or something?

Make them sign an employment contract. Believe me, the last thing you want is a union

Again, in my limited understanding, it seems like a union could serve to protect us, the writers and the ADs. That’s pretty compelling when you realize that HR departments exist to protect the company, not the employees. And that your agency is willing to let you go the second they have an excuse, and to hire someone younger, less experienced and who they can pay less. I would like the power of a big, organized group on my behalf (since that’s what my agency and ya holding company have), negotiating for my best interests: job security, fair pay, health care, reasonable work week, paid sick time, etc. just like they have teams of lawyers looking out for their bottom line. Is that not what a union does? It seems like we do it on an ad hoc basis in this app anyways, with insider bowls like The Salary Bowl. Wouldn’t organizing that ad hoc process be better? Why or why not?

Honestly aiga nationals is our best advocacy group but advertising doesn’t really embrace it like it should. And there’s aaf which is just ok

I don’t know one specifically for copywriters but I have met copywriters in aiga.

like

Yeah. Got me there! We have a bit more security vs knowing a show ends after 12 episodes. It’s definitely changing - that’s for sure. But union isn’t the answer until we’re all forced into freelance

@AD1 thanks so much. Had no idea those things existed. Regarding AIGA, Any idea if there’s an equivalent org for copywriters?

Can this little round off hurt later? The interviewer was basically asking me how much I am expecting and I told him industry standards. Kept pursuing it. In end he said just give me sense of your current salary and so I rounded off.
