Just did a full blood panel for my son .. came back with magnesium iron and omega deficiencies .. they say he needs to take at least 500mg magnesium before going to bed each day .. I think that is a lot for a 12 year old .. any thoughts ?

Not the same—but I’m a small female (25, 120 lbs) and my dr advised me to take 600mg every night, been doing this for two years now and it’s only improved my life dramatically

I would listen to the doctor that you sought out and asked to run a blood panel to get information and treatment for these issues…

What makes it a lot? If the doctor said to do that that’s what you should do. Concerning that you’d come here to second guess a licensed physician.

He’ll get diarrhea if it is too much magnesium. Just get a high quality (non oxide) magnesium. I take 500 magnesium citrate every evening. If I want to be sure to sleep well, I take 250 mg more.

400 mg is the minimum for adults to have a measurable difference in blood work. Also the excess magnesium is stored in the bones.

But yeah, like D1 said, listen to your PCP. What led to you getting a full blood panel on a 12 year old?

When you’re deficient in a mineral sometimes a doctor will put you on a higher amount for a while to get you back up. They might have your son retest in a few months to see if the supplement is helping. But echoing that you should ask his doctor for their reasoning if you have concerns.

I keep waking up every 2-3 hours at night. I get up to pee rinse my mouth and generally can fall back asleep right away. It’s been happening for weeks now. Say I go to sleep at 11, I’ll wake up at around 1, then around 3:30, then around 5:30. I’ll often just stay up. Or I might try to snooze for another hour or so. I’d like to sleep through from 11-7 as I used to. I guess the good thing is I don’t need an alarm anymore.
