I got burned by two projects in a row after working ludicrous hours and still delivering everything on time. Cost me a promotion window, a ton of salary/bonus, and likely a shot at my MBA applications. It stings to get blindsided like that. You live and learn, I guess. The world isn’t fair, and I admit I am still very frustrated. Telling myself daily it won’t matter in the long run, but I hear ya. 😕

Grass isn’t always greener on the other side. My best advice is stop comparing. Like you some of your friends have gotten into b school or been promoted, there are countless people your age who are either unemployed or dying to become a consultant. You’re one of the lucky ones!

Yeah, been hard to maintain that perspective.

Yep, had a similar experience.

Same thing happened to me 2 years ago. Was a C that was supposed to get promoted to SC but got burned on one short heavy turnover project. Stayed for a half year longer and left to make 1.7x my original salary. It truly was a blessing in disguise bc it would have taken years to get to where I am had I stayed at D. Hang in there. Good things are coming.

At 45 I can tell you it’s a marathon not a sprint. You’ll get tons of opportunity and you in 5/10 years you may not even be doing what you expect

Was this your only project? Or were you juggling?

It was a 1 month project right before year end. I had 10 months of solid reviews. I asked for a roll off because I felt like a liability. I just took on a lot and kept pushing through doing PST to EST hours for those 10 months and logging a heavy initiative load. Trying to put on a brave face but I feel stuck and depressed.

In the long run you won’t even remember. The most important is to self reflect and be honest with yourself why you didn’t make it and make the necessary adjustments.

I keep hearing that phrase in the long run it won’t matter, but it’s hard to see that. Yes it’s a marathon and I’m making the adjustments that I need to make but it’s pushing farther from where I’d like to be for a bschool case. I came in 2 years behind a campus hire and this will set me back 4….for one month of performance….

Sorry to hear this OP. Have you had a conversation with you coach about this?

My coach marked me as operating at the next level and no clue this was coming for year end. My coach requested for a follow up conversation which lead to nothing but vague answers from talent. My coach has expressed disappointment with what happened and how my TBA/TGL aren’t giving me straight answers.

Currently at Big4 with a fairly nice WLB and I’d love to pursue a MBB opportunity post-MBA for potentially better business experience/exit ops (more Advise work vs implement/operate done at Big4)
