Just finished a Vice documentary on “The Villages” in Florida. It suddenly hit me that the Boomer generation will be a statistical outlier when compared to previous and post generations. As a millennial I’ve come to grips that my family and I won’t have the same country and lifestyle my parents had. Holding 80% of the wealth has its benefits.

I share a similar feeling and view sadly. I feel there is a lot of money in circulation, life in US HCOL cities is expensive, yet the money seems to only go to the few and get hidden somewhere? Are the boomers just sitting on piles of cash? If so, you’d think this cash should re enter society eventually..

I’ll check the documentary out. Thank you

I predict that the senior living centers being built all over the country will be the next malls that sit vacant in the next 10-25 years once the Boomer generation goes away. Millennials and Gen X for sure won’t live in them, even if we had the wealth to do so.

like

I hope we’ll all age gracefully and won’t need to leave our homes, but if any of us will have the $ and will no longer be physically able to live in a regular home, I suspect we might have to consider moving to one of those centres.

I have not seen the documentary but live by a senior center and it genuinely look like a 5* hotel for seniors with nurses. That’s the sort of place I am referring to.

I think people need to stop ready studies and assuming their experts. I have parents and in-laws of the age where tough decisions have to be made. The Villages is just on tiny piece of a far bigger industry. My mother is choosing to be a home. Do you have ANY CLUE what the cost is to stay at home if you need 24 hour nursing, food, doctor visits? My father in law is at home and there are family members here that are taking turns to make sure he is eating well and taking medicine and getting to doctor visits, plus someone to help with cleaning once in a while. Do you have ANY IDEA what that costs? I’m also involved in the estate planning field and see the wealth transfer that is happening. What you’ll see is that transferring to the next generation, when those funds are actually available.
So, my youngish 🐟, make sure you save, protect your health and exercise, and I hope you live a good life. It’s a lot more complicated than you think it is.
Lastly, getting older is pretty terrific if you do those things.

I mean, I did major in undergrad and grad school in economic human geography. So I’d like to think I understand economics as well as basic human interaction. I too am currently working with my parents on this same situation. Together we’ve concluded to move them into a ranch style home rather then a retirement community, as that will be an asset in the long haul and they have the saving to afford in-home health care. I also have an idea of what it costs because I used to do the books for my grandparents before they moved into a community, and it is REALLY expensive.

You’re completely right, we should save, workout and enjoy the time we have. All I’m saying is that the boomer generation is a statistical outlier when it comes human population. They where lucky enough to grow up in a time when the US was the sole producer of nearly all the goods on the planet, when college didn’t cost an arm and a leg, when home house prices didn’t cost a lung, kidney and your first born. (Sarcasm)

All I’m saying is those retiring now are outliers and Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z, Gen Alpha will and have enter into a new normal of a interconnected, smaller and more easily traversable world.

Vice usually makes everything look way more dramatic and exaggerated. They make clickbait documentaries

While I agree with you on that point. Vice has turned into a clickbaiting news source. This one had mostly interviews with residents and the surrounding people. Not Vices typical “talk over” apocalyptic message that drowns out everything.

Ramboll - I really like and respect your knowledge base on this. I’m an old 🐟 at 61 so I’m dealing with parent situations when they are 85-91. This may be part of the difference in our perspectives. I have also seen a few more generational cycles. My generation earned a lot but certainly not equal across the economic spectrum - a separate serious issue. The main difference between my generation and the youngest groups are the quality and cost of care, and the resulting longer lives. I bet you’re already familiar with what is going on in Japan and their great difficulties with demographics.
What we face and how we prepare is different in some ways but the approach not much different. The original post said some conspiracy-sounding theory about The Villages. My mom has lived in a much much smaller and more modest senior citizens development in central Florida, for many years. Nice place and not any form of assisted living provided.
Bottom line is that we are living longer because care is available and expensive. The opportunity to earn a good living is still alive and well. Plan well.
And Ramboll, it would be fun to share a beer and a good conversation with you 🍺
