Just finished my 2021 taxes as a solo attorney and I don’t know whether to be sad that my business wasn’t more profitable 1.5 years after starting or happy that my husband and I are receiving a small refund. But, I am proud I turned a profit - even if it was small. However, the first quarter of 2022 is almost at the same gross profits as all of 2021. So, that’s a definite positive.

Thank you for the support! It’s hard sometimes being a solo and not having colleagues to share things with and commiserate with. This app is a huge benefit to me in being able to engage with other attorneys.

Re not having colleagues to share things - for the past several years, I have been in a law suite, where each of us is a solo; I enjoy being able to share and socialize with them (and sometimes we cross-refer matters); to me, it’s the best of both worlds; some of the best parts of being in a law firm, without being in a law firm (and without any financial constraints).

Hey, progress is progress. Well done and keep up the great work.

I've also been solo for 1.5 years and my profit is small as well, not enough to live on (in fact, not enough to get a tax refund because I didn't earn enough to pay tax), but I'm realising my life is so much better working for myself and there's more to life than money. Some things are more important than profit.

Agreed.

Keep up the great work. You’re definitely going in the right direction.

I’ve now reached the point in my career where I have the experience, a good client base, and consistent referral sources that I’m ready to leave the small firm I’m with and start my own practice. My preference would be to find a partner and form a partnership because I’d like to have someone to bounce ideas off of and for some social interaction, but if I can’t find the right partner, then I’ll do it alone. Any advice on branching off to start my own firm - whether it be solo or with a partner?

Any suggestions for an organizational/organization expert, coach, or someone that helps with getting firms organized? We need to be more efficient and have better systems in place.

Brief problem: We feel that we (partners) are unorganized, and as a result our staff is following the same disorganized structure and we’re not getting as much work/tasks completed as we should.

I need someone to help whip us into shape.

Do you give/get a bonus at the end of the year AND on your yearly review/hire date? So essentially two bonuses a year? Or just one bonus a year?

Any of you manage WFH / telecommute more than 50% of the time? When I was an associate, you hardly saw the principal/owner. Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in my area of law (domestic relations/family), even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.

Back when the pandemic first hit, everybody at the firm took a 20% pay cut (with 20% reduction in billables...which was meaningless because I still had work to get done in a timely manner). Pay cuts still in effect through end of year. Anybody else out there still working under pandemic-related salary reductions?

For those who are more of a general practice (solo/small firm) - how do you know what type of cases you’ll enjoy doing and actually know what needs to be done? Example: from probate, to civil ligation, to real estate/property, to family law, to criminal, etc.; they are similar in some senses but vary tremendously as well. How do you juggle cases that you aren’t too familiar with or that you don’t know much about the area of law? Do you just wing it? Look to mentors for help?
