Just found out that a 1040 was rejected on 10-17, the day after filing. The return was refiled but not until Monday which seems outside the perfection period. How screwed am I?

I'm sure your client would be thrilled to know that you are soliciting advice about how to file their returns from an internet message board. Lol. #Vision2020 #$350anhour

As an audit person, this is the first time I learned something tax related - thanks guys!!!

Rejects are okay, you have 5 days to correct it and e-file again. If you decide to paper file print the e-file reject and attach a statement why you had to paper file late.

like

^honestly dead serious and no sarcasm!

like

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm reading that the perfection period is 5 calendar days but I'm also seeing that you can paper file within 10 days and be considered on time.

By the way, what code should I charge for the advice?

What was rejected? The fed or a state? I find it strange the it was rejected a day after filing. The rejection comes pretty quickly.

like

No it doesn't ours were outstanding for almost the full week

EY will be on the hook for the penalties.

like

I normally get a rejection within a hour or two if it is a fed. The states normally take longer to reject.

like

Why was the return rejected?

At this pount you are better off filing a paper copy. If it was rejected Oct 16th you have until Oct. 30th to file the paper return. You have 10 business days from the date of rejection to paper file the return.

Firm is on the hook for penalties, and will take it out any pbb’s of those on the engagement at year end.

Thanks everyone for your help. The appropriate charge code for this will be the (current) most annoying manager's in your office who's project is the most under water right now. You did a great job (some of you, others you are terrible people) so please be generous with your time and also charge your dinner to this code too. You earned it.

PwC 1.. do you do the efiling directly.. or is it done in India?

I'm sure there won't be penalties if the client does NOT owe any taxes. Otherwise, the late filing penalty is a tiny (can't remember) percentage of the balance dues. There's an IRS Publication for this that you can easily search for.

We do it @tom1

@PwC 1. Hmm... I have seen NY, NJ and some other odd ball states take a few days, but a full week? Do you use go systems or cch?

You might explore first time abatement but would reach out to one of our IRS controversy folks who would be able to confirm for you. If you are outside of the perfection period I would make sure the Partner is aware and they can relay it to the client.

File a paper copy and get it out fast. Make sure its good and most likely its all good.
