Just found out that I messed up my own W-2 when I was hired last year and I haven't had federal taxes withheld from any of my 2021 paychecks. I could pay for a nice international vacation with what I owe. Anyone else questioning how they even got hired at your firm?

How did you not realize your paychecks were ~20% higher than they should’ve been …
On you bud

I wouldn’t have noticed

You should question how the firm let that slip through.

I called HR today and basically got a whoopsie poopsie response from the other side. "We had a few issues with this same thing several years ago."

Those were some great paychecks though, am I right

I just read this post out loud and my wife yelled at me for being an idiot.

If ok OP, we’re in this together.

I had something sort of similar. I have always had my taxes dialed in with the number of exemptions on my W4. I moved from the 32 to 35% tax bracket and forgot to adjust my W4. I owe about 17k in taxes luckily I have it in savings but I still hate the irs.

EY2
You do realize that the irs already gets copies of w2’s, 1099’s and various other forms. They could (in theory) send you a statement with everything already filled out. Except they are legally prevented from doing so.

How about we fix the tax code? Good luck. You have to get past the tax preparation lobby first. They are the reason that the 70% of all filers that don’t file any additional forms, still have to file at all.

For the vast majority of Americans, the irs already has all the forms. You are just required to fill out the paperwork yourself, without help from the irs, so that you will turn to hrblock, taxcut, <insert paid provider> and pay them to do it for you… even though there is literally no reason to require it to work that way.

I guess if we actually got the bs out of the way and gave them the tools to do their jobs, we’d chance losing the villain were so love to hate.

Errr, but didn’t you look at your pay stubs and ever ask yourself ‘why is my paycheck so fat?’

funny

How do you even do this? What do you even mark so that your company doesn’t withhold federal taxes AT ALL?

like

Of course it was ADP! My payroll system requires 2 over-rides to make federal or state taxes exempt just to avoid these kinds of mistakes.

Be forewarned, the IRS may send your employer a notice to withhold at the max just to make sure this doesn't happen again. They don't like people owing them so much money.

helpful

OP.. I did this too, but for state. Accidentally checked a box on my W-4 that said I was a full time student expecting to make less than 18k annual.

Can only be mad at myself - but also don’t understand why there weren’t checks and balances by the company that is paying me more than 18k/year. Lesson learned!

I had no federal income tax withheld because I messed up my W-4 form for 2021 at my previous job…I had to pay thousands of dollars in tax, but luckily I was not subject to penalty because it was my first year of earning enough income to owe taxes. However, the CPA I hired didn’t know the rule and included the penalty when he filed my return WITHOUT my consent…Never thought the IRS would catch the mistake and issue me a refund check!!

like

How did this happen? What exemptions did you mark?

There really aren't any exemptions that could help me. Capital gains and lack of federal withholdings are what boned me.

Hi All, I recently interviewed at Amazon and Google for software engineer and passed both interviews. I have an offer on the table from Amazon but with Google I am officially in team matching and my recruiter tells me that the queue is pretty backed up now and it can take a long time. My question is should I take the Amazon offer now or decline Amazon and hold out for Google? I have heard that Google has better wlb/benefits. But I'm scared to decline Amazon without a guaranteed job offer.
