Not in the same boat, but early in my career and in my 20s i thought i could plan everything. In my head, i would marry and have kids only once i was a manager. And while i did great in my career, im 34 now, single and craving for a child. So i would say don’t worry about your promotion right now, if this is a pregnancy you want, then simply enjoy it!
Me too EY1. Wish I’m not single. OP, all my peers that have kids are doing the same/as well as I do, so I don’t think having kids or not would impact your career unless you want to shift your focus to your children. Obviously, you need to talk to your coach and partners to understand the expectations.
So I’ve not been in that position but my personal thought is that if you are passed on for a promotion that you otherwise would have gotten because you had a baby during busy season... time to find a new firm.
Idk if it’s that simple. Busy season is the most stressful time of year and that’s when you’re actually able to show your skills and give your management team reasons to promote you. If you miss the entire busy season as an S3, I think one would really miss a lot of important client meetings / technical accounting problems and solutions that would show you’re ready to be promoted
My manager got pregnant and had her kid in Jan! She missed all of busy season because she was on maternity leave until June. She still got promoted to M2 though. I’m not sure how, but it seems possible! Good luck and congrats!!!!
I was in my third trimester during busy season and went into birth two days before My maternity leave. I still got my manager promotion!
I actively asked for feedback before the start of busy season with managers/directors on things I need to demonstrate for manager promotion. Did check ins and feedback meetings to confirm I’m on track and document progress etc. Made sure to train seniors on my roles outside of compliance so they can handle things when I’m out. Goal was to fully transition my duties before maternity leave started. Created transition document to show where I’m with all projects I’ve been involved and shared with my manager/directors.
Just make sure to actively ask for feedback and make improvements as needed and document them before you are out! And make sure they know you are up for promotion.
I told one of the director I work with during my first semester because I was having bad morning sickness (10 weeks I think) and was working from home a lot, which was fine in our team tho. I told other managers and directors/partners in our team around 12-16 weeks so they are aware of my leave for next busy season staffing/planning. Just tell them when you want. I’m sure they can and will work around your leave! If not sure, talk to someone you trust or had experience in your team/office for advice
I haven’t been exactly in your shoes but I am actively TTC. I don’t think you should worry. You’ll be on maternity leave through August/Sept next year but you will have finished the performance year. Other women have gotten promoted while on maternity leave. And worst case you get promoted the next year.
Hey FYI - the Deloitte performance year ends in April for audit (exact date slightly differs). Hope that helps a little and good luck!
I got multiple interviews as a senior during maternity leave, but ended up negotiating and staying at the firm. If you're unhappy you're free to look into your other options, but every pregnancy is different. Some people are totally fine in trimester 3 but wfh as much as possible, some people get really tired and have to take more breaks. However you have to power through this, make sure you talk to your spouse so they can support you in your game plan and your career 💪 and I always say: work smarter, not harder! If tired delegate as much as you can, and be proactive about delegating rather than waiting until you're working 60+ hr weeks. I was able to work busy season hours with my first pregnancy no problem, just worked from home sometimes Bc the nyc subway sucks (just an anecdote)
Thank you so much this is so encouraging!
I had a baby in January of my S3 year, so I only got back to work in May - right before roundtables - and it didn’t affect my promotion. I think firms nowadays are careful not to discriminate based on the fact that someone wants to have a child.

Not me, but my friend was promoted to SM during maternity leave after missing busy season.
My manager got promoted to SM while on her maternity leave. Think you’ll be fine.
