Just FYI. One of my friend is on his way back from Hawaii vacation and he says Honolulu is totally crowded. Few roads in Kauai are closed due to floods. Airbnb’s, rental cars and hotels are too expensive right now.

For HR folks, what do companies do when you resign during the holiday shutdown period? Do they let you go immediately?

During my PTO, my SM called me and asked me to start plugging myself in and he mentioned that I don't want to be left behind. He asked me to set up a call during my PTO to "catch up" with the rest of the team. I cannot wait to get out of this company as this is kinda touching my bottom line.

We just found out we lost our baby at 14 weeks; no heartbeat on the ultrasound today. D&C tomorrow. Husband and I are devastated, shocked, and don’t know what to do. Mamas who have been here, how did you heal? We don’t even know where to begin.

I’m so burnt out recruiting during covid. Turned away after multiple final rounds. Will start using my pto and try again next spring when the market is hopefully better

I got an offer that I’m really excited about and I would start in a little over a month. I really wanted to put in two weeks and have my last day be the same day that my bonus is paid out. I’m desperate to get time off before this new job and they already offered a great signing bonus. Should I put in the two weeks and hope for the best or is it basically impossible that they would still give me the bonus? If I know they aren’t giving me the bonus then I would be ready to just leave immediately.

So, it’s my first holiday season with my new firm. How much does one spend on a gift for one’s legal assistant? I’ve been told it’s customary, just not the amount.

Can anyone who works close to billing speak to the rationale behind why vacation days aren’t billed 8.0 per day, and why they don’t count toward an associate’s billable hours?

Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.

Has anyone successfully taken unpaid leave after short term disability? I think my doctor’s willingness to continue filling out my paperwork for STD is reaching an end but I’m having panic attacks even thinking about returning to work so I’d like to take more time off. I’m willing to take unpaid leave but not sure if broaching this with HR will just cause my company to fire me

At 36 weeks and would really love to take a family vacation with 4/5 month old to Europe during mat leave... was thinking a more laid back trip like Southern Italy for a week... am I crazy?

New Partner. My other partners want to change benefits and perks around to attract more young talent - I need to brainstorm ideas. What great thing does a company offer that makes you want to work there (besides compensation obviously)?

So a (non-Asian) friend asked me (also non-Asian) to order Chinese or Korean food with her to celebrate Lunar New Year. I declined, saying that it seems weird to ask a Chinese employee to serve *me* on *their* holiday. To be transparent, I do have a thing about holidays and labor, trying to avoid shopping and accessing services on holidays, so this might be part of that feeling I have, but I also feel my whiteness on this one. Curious on others' thoughts on this... for next year.

So, apparently my school has the lowest teacher attendance this year. As teachers- what would be a good incentive to get perfect attendance and not use your PTO?
