Just got a new job and feeling like the “diversity hire.” Everyone else is white or Indian and in the town halls they keep talking about upping Diversity and Inclusion targets to include more Female and Black/Latino individuals.

So what, use the opportunity and make your next move your best move. If you plan on staying bring in more of us, if its a stepping stone stay focused and get out of it what you came for.

I've experienced this in smaller groups on camera. ~15 senior white dudes patting themselves on the back for recent D&I hires, with me as the sole woman and/or person of color on the call. For real

Honestly I’m at the point now where I don’t mind or care being the “diversity hire.” They’ve been getting in and ahead based on connections, hand outs, and mediocrity for a lifetime and if now REAL action is taking place to boost us up then I’m here for it. Like previously stated, if you’re staying, work to help bring in more so less of us have to feel like the diversity hire.

I always felt/known that I was the diversity hire, and oh well that doesn’t mean I’m going to squander the opportunity to help others -black folks / Spanish folks- get-in! Who cares if you were the diversity hire, just keep grinding and show them what a true leader is as well as your skills.

We've all been there, or may find ourselves there. Attempt to use that access to your advantage, such as requesting mentorship from those senior white people, then earning their sponsorship to advance your career and support further diversity efforts

like

No you weren’t. They same a lot of shit but if you couldn’t do the job you wouldn’t be there. Think of all the homogeneity hires that shouldn’t be there

Put the word out and get more of us hired. Everybody else automatically gets considered or hired except us. As long as its work im interested in and im compensated fairly, and they treat me with respect, ill be fine. We all should use the opportunities to bring others along because this window wont be open for long. Plus if you didnt have the skillsets they needed, they wouldnt have hired you. Learn game then run game.

Ate you like the one and done hire, or are they trying to change their hiring and retention, but are just slow as hell like all these companies? If you're qualified for role, don't question yourself. You deserve to be there just as much as anyone else. Probably more given the hurdles they like to place in our way.

So the Co-Chair of the Deloitte Black Action Council was not a Black woman but an Indian Woman who is now the Chief Diversity Officer. I feel a little duped and bamboozled. As a Black American this person does not share our history with slavery, Jim Crow, etc. I don’t think anything will come of this council. I wonder are black initiatives will become an all minority initiative. Is Black hiring going to increase. Will more blacks be considered for senior management up to partner positions

I’m seeing a lot of posts where leadership has been committed to making changes, but one thing I’ve noticed no one speaking about is transparency in pay equity. Ensuring there’s diversity in hiring future employees is great, but what are they doing to support pay equity with their current BIPOC employees. How can we ask leaders to release this type of data?

I made the jump to pharma and at first I thought some of the weirder tasks I was given were just the norm for pharma writers. But I can’t shake the feeling that it’s less about my title and more about my gender. I tend to be expected to take notes and relay tasks to my male art director partner and creative director. Like the level of hand holding I have to provide for grown ass men is unnerving. I started this job during quarantine so I haven’t met anyone irl, but is there a way to address it?

I am looking to gain certification or other credentialing in diversity and inclusion, not only because it would look good on my resume both for future job-search purposes and also to become better educated in this area, which is growing in importance. I looked at SHRM's "Inclusive Workplace Culture Specialty Credential" and got a bit of "sticker shock" at the cost - $1,655.00 for members. Does anyone have other suggestions on training/credentialing in this area?

Have two offers and unsure which to take. Ex Big 4 and have done software startups since. Option 1: Director role back in Big 4. Good package. Good fit with my area of expertise, focusing on tech solutions and partnering with startups. Working across all industries and clients. Option 2: Big Tech/GAFAM (level = L6 google/e6 FB/65 Microsoft, which I’m told is Director equivalent) Even better package. Account Technology Strategist. Less client diversity but using breadth of their tech.
