I would like a creative partner who is close to my level experience, I don’t think that’s unreasonable for a CD level job.
Leading someone can help you grow too
Worried that I’m getting into a bad situation here. How to best navigate this situation? I want to be with someone who will help me grow. Not someone I’ll be leading.
Isn’t the point of being CD that you already have a bunch of underlings to help grow?
I experienced this recently. Did not work out at all. Babysitting partners will consume your every working hour.
I have a partner with significantly less experience than me and looks to me for cues. It’s not actually the worst. She’s really really good. And as long as your partner is a self-starter and you’re not babysitting, it could be good. How are you with working solo? If you can kick ass solo AND kick ass with a partner, you should be fine...
You’ll be fine. As long as you like them, you really don’t need your partner to be your equal to do well. Give it a chance, I’ve made my best projects in very similar situations (with different partners).
Would you rather have a mediocre CD who has a lot of years? Maybe this guy/gal is just one of those hotshot creatives that shot their way up. Who knows if it's a good agency they probably had a reason for hiring them
Designer 1, I hope you’re not implying that a CD wouldn’t want to grow. Your goal should be to always be learning and growing. And you should hope to have a CD that seeks that for them self. Otherwise, what are they teaching you? Also, OP is not wrong for seeking a partner that is a fit for them. @OP did you have good vibes with the person? Maybe you need to come up with some questions and have another round of interview with the partner. Ask questions about their work and process that will help you understand if they are going to be a good fit for what you’re looking for.
