Be diligent and detail oriented. Volunteer and be seen as someone who wants to do the work. Be professional and communicate. Don’t miss deadlines. Plenty of lawyers don’t have lawyer relatives and do just fine.
Work hard. If you mess up but there is a justification, don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. Ask lots of questions, try your best to listen to all the answers. Make sure people see your hard work. DO NOT BE RUDE TO ANYONE, INCLUDING SUPPORT STAFF.
It’s not any different than any other job. Show up on time and go from there. Signed, Only College Grad in Family (let alone “only lawyer”)
Congrats! Believe in yourself first and foremost and don't ever let yourself feel like you dont belong there in the same way anyone else there does
I find going office to office to check in with partners and ask for work is a good way to make a good impression and get a good workload going!
Oh this last point is so important. Your life can be enhanced ten fold by having support staff on your side. They are just as much people as fellow attorneys, and they touch all the same matters. And if they appreciate you and your respectful treatment, you’ll get all the best conference rooms.
And leverage knowledgeable paralegals when you're new. Good ones in your area will know a lot of basics you don't. As an example, a noob probably doesn't know how to actually enforce a judgment. An experienced paralegal will tell you exactly what you do, and hand you some examples of when it's been recently done.
I still run certain procedural questions by one who knows her shit very well. She's often more familiar with obscure agency procedure and rules than I am.
A good paralegal can help you look good. They aren't lawyers, but then often have some useful knowledge that lawyers may not have (and would need to look up and figure out instead).
Ask questions, listen, give advanced notice if you cant meet a deadline, be responsive to emails and check in with your supervisor before you leave for the day. It's really not that difficult to be a great associate as long as you apply yourself and are not arrogant. I've seen so many associates not do those simple things and fail.
You all are the best 🌹🙏🏻
