Just got an rx for reading glasses and they will also be helpful with looking at a screen. The optical place is trying to sell me “blue” lenses. Does anyone use these? They seem to have a yellowish hue to them. Also would it be better to get progressive lenses?

I hear the blue lenses are really good to help with eye strain if you are looking at and working on screens all day long.

My dad is an ophthalmologist. I asked him about the benefits of “blue light” lenses and he said it’s BS (something most legitimate research backs up). It’s just an upsell for eyeglass stores. If you want to reduce eye strain from looking at screens, the best thing to do is to take frequent breaks. Try the “20-20-20” rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Fun fact: the biggest source of blue light, that absolutely massively overpowers blue light from any screen, is the sky. If you can look at the sky, your computer screen isn’t going to hurt you

I tried progressive lenses years ago and couldn’t get used to them. The prescription is only in a thin vertical band in the middle of the lens, so if you move your eyes outside this area, everything is blurry. When reading, I would have to move my head back and forth. Maddening. They say you get used to it but I tried for six weeks and eventually went back to bifocals. Now I have a separate pair for driving and for computer. Good luck.

Similar to D1 I asked my Ophthalmologist (non-dad opto) who also said it’s BS and by simply upgrading the lense to anti-glare/reflective that does all the filtering you’d need. Blue light filtering lenses are BS according to the doctor

I use Crizal Prevencia lenses for computer use. They block blue light and aren’t tinted. Personal preference, but I can’t stand wearing yellow lenses

Agree blue light filter doesn’t protect your eyes, but it can help (supposedly) moderate your circadian rhythm, especially if you’re using electronic devices in the evening.

Why are you paying for reading glasses, just ask your doctor what magnification power you need and buy them on amazon!

There are varying degrees of blue light protection. I definitely don’t upsell it, but do give the patient the choice.
On the rare occasion I sell the yellow ones, it’s to a gamer or someone who works around a lot of fluorescent lighting. I don’t think it’s so much for protection,as it is for comfort.
Many anti-glare products have it built in. Especially the better ones. Typically those anti glare products will have a purple hue. ie. Crizal Prevencia or Zeiss Drivesafe. The most obvious is Blutek.
With regard to progressives: an everyday progressive won’t work if you’re on the computer all day. You’ll want either a computers progressive(edge to edge at midrange, small area for distance/close). Or a single vision computer.

These are great reasons to talk to your optician about your needs and remember, you get what you pay for.

I need some perspective please. I’ve been through a rough patch this year - I lost some of my closest family and now live alone with a previously absent parent. I never pass my grief onto others and usually invest a lot of time in building friendships, but I realise none of my friends have checked in on how I’m doing, nobody ever tells me about their weddings, promotions, happy milestones anymore; even when I reach out they’re ghosting me. I feel abandoned. Should I move on? How do I fix this ):
