Just got hired. Nearly everyone in my practice is still on the bench, considering holidays are coming up am I out of luck until Jan-feb? Anything I should do other than BD work and network?

Welcome :). Knock out your CPE, get involved in planning your counseling family year end festivities, and start networking like crazy. Usually a lot of projects hit right after the first of the year, and you want to be on one of them.

Honestly, ride the bench wave. Have fun, enjoy time with your family

Notify your staffing manager of travel plans before making them. They'll take care of keeping you out of trouble

What's CPE? Would it be a problem to work from home? Most of my networking is done on Friday's and my BD can easily be done remotely. I've honestly taken my sweet time coming into the office but we have been urged to always be available just in case someone wants to pull us into a project. I'd love to travel a bit but I'm concerned about making any travel plans

CPE is the required training hours. Go to the office if it will help you network (I.e., if there are SMs or PPEDs working there.) otherwise work from home is fine.

I was laid off from a resource management role, working with employees approaching or on the bench, working with managers to staff projects, and support functions like report creation, scheduling, etc. Roles like this are few and many large consulting firms have frozen internal hiring. Do you think it would be beneficial to get a SHRM cert? Would that help get a "talent related" HR role? Worth the money? I have a background in recruitment as well.

When you resign and you happen to be on the bench at that time. After giving two week notice, so you start to tell colleagues that you are leaving and schedule time to catch up with them in groups/ 1:1 (since you have time); or just wait until your last to send out farewell email to inform all the people you’ve interacted with at work?

I'm supposed to join D. in Jan (after my original start dt got pushed from Sept.), however, due to circumstances outside of my control, I think I may need to push my start date - do you think the recruiter will be receptive to this? I've heard the bench is full of new grades now (I'm a new grade) or will the recruiter take this as reneging?

Advice needed: I’ve been in a long distance relationship for a while. Things are generally going well but when it comes to traveling to see each other I’m always the one making more of the effort to go to him. I understand his job isn’t as flexible but even when it was during Covid he had an excuse and I would be the one going to see him and spending weeks leaving behind my day to day to spend time with him. Am I wrong for wanting more effort and flexibility on his end?

Question for you all: Left D to Company A for a 50% raise in TC and slated to start in <1 week. However, just got an offer at Company B for a 100% raise in TC compared to D, or 30% raise in TC compared to company A. Both firms do similar work but B provides a more solid comp package. Job duties would be relatively similar. Is the % jump worth burning the bridge? Would have chosen Company B if the offer came sooner but the % difference in A to B is at my [personal] 30% threshold. TIA!

Hi EY and Fishes everywhere! I might be getting an offer to join tax as an S1 (or exp. assoc), probably not being able to start until mid August based off how the process has been. However, I currently work at a mid size firm and we’re already getting into busy season. How would it look if I asked EY to postpone my start date till after 10/15 and say that I’m not ready to be thrown into a Big 4 busy season and that I don’t want to leave my current firm out to dry. Thank you all so much! @EY
