I feel like with McKinsey you could honestly just take the time off to chill
A lot of comments recommending coding. I disagree. You should learn how not to code. “No-code” is one of the fastest growing markets in venture capital and is quickly making way to enterprise. You can build full-stack app’s, integrate API’s, build AI/ML - all w/o writing code. Software dev is one of the skills being automated faster than anything. Creative skills - like UX design, are harder to automate and becoming much more valuable. Reply if you want to know more.
...low no code relies on trust in efficient and effective code (across platforms, enabling elasticity and resilience, etc.) Some dubious assertions have been made in reply here and strategy folks need to be aware of trade offs. Top tier firms are able to afford the best when their ecosystem enables it to do so. Imo, get some ops experience. It's like leading in the executive branch before going back to simply leveraging spin capabilities from leading thought without the experience of doing.
Cloud hosts love stupid, inefficient code that drive up billable infrastructure costs.

Ummm can I DM you? I was not under the impression that the firm was engaging in layoffs...
The CTLs are not proportionally higher this year than before. So the firm is definitely not doing higher attrition thru CTLs, that is not how SAR committees work.
Sorry OP, I don’t think you need to worry about sharpening skills unless you specifically want to break in certain type of roles.
Given you’re the ideal candidate for a strategy group, just keep up with industry trends, rehash some casing mechanics to be interview ready.
Finally, network network network, it’ll only help. Don’t be shy using partners and above to land you a job.
Analytics. Basic SQL and/or Python
Agree - my basic ass SQL is more than enough to query, get what I want and then manipulate in excel / tableau

Are you a counsel out, or does McK do actual layoffs.
Low performance, basically
I’d recommend picking up a coding language like Python. It isn’t going to specifically help in an S&O role, but it’s still useful for future opps. Good luck OP and don’t worry. MBB grads are always in high demand.
Find it odd that everyone’s recommending coding, esp for strat and ops. isn’t that work getting pushed offshore?
A1, D2: I understand most of the recommendations here not that OP should learn coding to pivot to a opertative tech role. But to have the knowledge helps to make better management decisions on what‘s possible or also evaluate growth strategies or digital business model.
So I‘d also go with coding or big data analysis
I would devote time to networking like P2 mentioned. You only have so many hrs in the day and learning to code is time intensive. Also I guarantee that once you put python or R on your resume/ LinkedIn you are just going to get hammered with programmer jobs. I know SAS, R and some python and a lot of jobs I get sent to me are programmer ones

Data Science
PMP, IDEO Design Thinking, and any HBR, Economist, and financial modeling courses on Coursera
All a PMP really does is give everyone a common framework/ standards to work off of.
What geo is this? NA at least isn’t doing layoffs for client facing ppl (though ofc they can reduce extra headcount under the guise of CTL)
Couple examples of this in the McK bowl recently
Cloud. Aws or azure
Look small.
For fun I’d get into futurism, horizon scanning, and strategic forecasting through the lens of economic and social breakdown, you might also research what companies are out there doing threat mitigation with tech and data science.
The world is going to be going through a rough next 4-5 years, companies need people who can help them see through the fog of disruption and change.
The more fancier the statement, more bs behind the scene!
Consider going out on your own. What better time?
I live in a major tech hub, and point out that while knowing python/investing in coding is a nice to have, tech companies will still hire software engineers to do software engineering work. Basic proficiency in SQL and data analytics should be just fine. My suggestion is to find specific industries/sectors and network. Startups provide opportunity to experiment and learn. I was able to pivot into product management by learning PM subject matter and then, doing free consulting work for early stage startups. Best or luck!
Sorry to hear that op. What location if you don't mind me asking?
Im facing exactly this same situation as the person who post. Is there a way we can dm each other? Which office r u at? Wht did hr tell u? Hr told me that i have the option to leave voluntarily even though performance rd has nt been conducted n no CTL yet.. they somehow told me tht CTL is highly likely.. please share more details of your situation..
surprisingly there IS a way to DM
