That article is wack. Two people with a kid making $110 and pretax savings/specific spending accounts of $71?
Take out FICA (7.65% of gross) and that is another $8.5k is gone from paycheck. National teacher average for single healthcare coverage costs $1.2k (first link in google search), so let’s say another $2k gone. If factual, they could claim exempt status for federal tax withholding a but not sure about MC state. Let’s say no tax withholdings. So net paychecks, at most, are $28k.
1k a month gone in rent (NC two bedroom average per google), another $2k per year gone in daycare not covered by dependent care plan. Down to $14k or ~$1k a month for car payments or service, gas, groceries, utilities, eating out (this fictitious family clearly isn’t though), etc, etc.
So, I guess possible but highly unlikely a family is saving 60+% of their $110k pay and living on $1k a month (excl. rent).

What’s a 457 plan? Do you guys contribute to that?
Similar to 401k but a few different rules, offered to govt or some nonprofit workers. Spouse has one at hospital so we get to max out 3 retirement accts at 19k each.
