Just got offered a salary that is about 34K more than what I earn now for the same position. I love where I work though and want to see if I can negotiate my current salary. How should I go about it?

It's all about tone and messaging. You can say as many would "hey I just got an offer from x company, what can you do to beat it?" Or you can say, "hey just want you to know that i received a great offer but I love this place and I plan to stay. But that does bring up a question, what do you think my prospects here in the future might be?" If they value you, they'll tell find a way to let you know how you can grow in the company. But if they simply tell you that they like what you are doing now and just want to see you keep going (ie they are not planning on promoting you/give you a raise), then you know they don't value you and you can move on.

like

Then at that point it's making sure to leave on good terms. Give them plenty of notice and just let them know it's an opportunity you can't say no to but hope that you might work together again someday

I’ve been in this position. Agree with the previous comments about honesty and also working openly with your boss to determine how badly they’d want to keep you. Here’s the thing.. if you want to make the play for them to match, you have to be willing to leave and take the other job if it doesn’t work out. Don’t play this game with a bad hand and try to bluff your way to that significant of a raise. Do this when you truly want to stay but would be happy to take the other offer. For me the result was my boss calling the CEO on his holiday and matching the offer ($40k increase) that same day. I happily accepted and stayed.

Must be at droga to be underpaid that much

likefunny

Surprisingly no im not! But good to know!

like

Agree with DMM1. I wouldn’t put the $15k out there though. Just leave it at $34k and see where they land. You’ll know how much they value your work by the response. Be ready to walk

like

You can tell them, but even if they match or beat it, you're a dead employee walking and will be cut first chance they get. If you renegotiate, make sure they include a 6-month or more guarantee of employment.

like

Totally disagree and think it really depends on your relationships at your current company. I was in a similar position about 2 years ago and stayed at my company and have gotten multiple promotions, raises and greater responsibility and influence, etc

like

Take that offer.

like

Be honest. Tell them you want to stay but can’t turn down such a raise. They’ll either tell you there’s nothing they can do (and you leave) or they’ll come back to you with a counter offer. Which you’ll have to evaluate once you get it. You’ve got to be willing to leave if their counter is too low or they don’t bother to counter. But they’ll understand it’s a business decision. That’s a big bump.

like

Once you start leveraging offers to get a raise they’ll see you as one foot out the door

likehelpful

I wasn’t planning on it. They came to me

Carefully? They may tell you to take it. Nice bump!

helpful

I would just be honest and tell your boss exactly what you wrote. Would you be happy if they half matched it?

like

@OP you can always chat to them first. Most people prefer honesty over you trying to play them and demanding a match price by a certain deadline etc. you can always see what they put back to you and then see how you feel about it.

Don't leave if you're at Droga and McGarry is trying to snag you. No matter the money.

like

I hear yes

like

Same situation here, OP! How did you end up handling?

like

It’s hard to judge without knowing the companies involved. Can you give us a rating of 1-10 for each, based on your perception of the two companies. Raises are important and $34K is a big jump. But if you’re doing really well in your current job AND it’s a significantly better agency, then may be worth staying and trying to get at least a $15K raise.

like

Yeah I’d take the 15K bump. Both agencies are doing really well. The one that I’m at just won huge at Cannes and the other has been willing a hell of a lot of pitches and redoing their structure

Is it in the same city or comparable cost of living? That makes a big difference on what the actual pay bump is

That 34k bump is probably worth roughly 900/paycheck (after tax), and exponentially more long term if there’s a company match to your 401k.

Why were you looking the first place? Was it for $?

I wasn’t looking. They approached me and kept on pursuing me so I decided to see why they were so keen.
