Take some time off before your next job. Everything you’re feeling is how I felt when I left RSM/GT/BDO this summer. Looking back, I’m shocked I made it there as long as I did, it destroyed my mental health. I had a month off between that job and this one, and it made things so much better. I don’t work in a toxic environment anymore, and I actually experience happiness again (which made me realize how much I was sacrificing at my last firm - though I didn’t realize it while I was in it because I didn’t have perspective on how good things could be...). You’re definitely not alone, and things will get brighter.

@SA1 are you still in PA?

I feel the same way! I got my cpa last year and thought it would give me a confidence boost but I feel bad all the time. I’m trying to look for a new job but I’m so scared I won’t know what I’m doing. I always felt like I was super smart but public accounting has killed my confidence and I’m scared that feeling is going to hold me back

like

I am 100% feeling this! Left EY, and feel totally burned out and lost. Zero confidence or motivation.

For anyone else that has experienced this... how did you overcome this and how long did it take?

like

I’ve been away from RSM/GT/BDO for six months and I find that I have to still actively work on my confidence. But I landed in a great team and have solid work-life balance, so that definitely helped my motivation. But it’s still a process...

like

Thank you so much for sharing this. This is exactly how I feel after a very strenuous past couple of quarters. I made the decision to resign from my position. But I am experiencing burn out and do think taking some time before finding my next position is a necessity to try and rebuild my confidence and courage.

like

and instructed, I feel tortured. But I know eventually I need to get a job...anyone had such an experience before? What was wrong with me?

This is me too! Thanks for posting. I didn't realize this is a mental health issue but surely it is. I felt my social skills decided too but slowly working on being out

Idk about you but to me I feel like it made me invincible. If you were able to stay there for x amount of time and survived at least one busy season, there is nothing in this world that can bring you down.

like

EY3, this did not happen to me during my first busy season. It came later on in my career. I hope you will never feel like this because it sucks.

like

Wow ... I agree with everyone else, if you can, definitely take some time off for self-care.

I’m trying to decide if getting another degree is right for me. I currently work at a B4 cyber consulting practice that focuses on technical implementations. I often find that I don’t always have the “why” behind what I’m doing without researching. I’ve been playing around with the idea of getting a second bachelors in CS online and wanted to see if others thought this would be a solid plan. I know I could learn most of the information myself, but the structure would help motivate me to finish.

Anyone work at Citi IA? Talked to a recruiter who mentioned bonuses are a significant part of the comp structure. He compared the role level of a senior manager @b4 with a salary comp of 175-225; would be around 150k ~ at citi with 60k bonus. He made it sound like the bonus would be significant.
