In-House Counsel

Just got passed for a position in-house at a Fortune 300 company. 2019 grad with 2 full years of in-house experience in law school. This sucks. Should I focus on law firm positions?

Grab what ever you can(firm government civil) and keep applying in-house. However, the chances of you getting an in-house position doing non-insurance work are slim to none.

Yeah, I know, first hand, one of the insurance companies you listed rarely ever hires new graduates.

It feels like being an art director is the worst position. We’re expected to wear so many hats - concepting, writing, designing, animating, file management, retouching, etc etc. We do 80% of the work, put in the most hours, and then can’t progress because we don’t have the time to do “proactive briefs” and we burn out because the expectations are ridiculous. Has anyone successfully pivoted out of art direction and where have you landed?

Some of these posts are ridiculous. They’re like just exited consulting to FAANG/Niche Startup with $150k base and $400k TC with 6 months of experience, you can do it too! Then they ghost or explain that they are a former SWE 😬 coming from MBB. Going to some super Niche role that people with crazy backgrounds are recruited for. Congrats, but not everyone has that background

Someone I used to work with at another firm wants a referral for a role to manage my team. I don’t want to report to them, but if I refuse to refer and they get hired any way, it wouldn’t look good.

What is the best message when informing the rest of your company that someone was terminated? The backstory is that this employees performance has been struggling, he was put on a PIP, and in recent convos, he’s said that his role isn’t for him. As he is getting terminated due to performance, it feels more amicable now that he knows it’s not working and that he needs to find a new job. Thoughts on message to the rest of the company?

When leaving a firm in part because of the type of work the exit op gives, and in part because of changes at the firm you are leaving, how open should one be about the issues at the firm one is leaving, to avoid burning bridges? I want to provide feedback, but I also don't want to piss people off.

What do admissions officers think about “Special Projects Managers”? I was offered a job with this title, but the title seems vague to me and maybe less strategy oriented than the work I would actually be doing in the role. Is there a similar title that would be a better sell to admissions?

Not meant to be a controversial post. Received an offer from KPMG. Cool group. Makes sense to move but, is the KPMG brand name going to hurt branding/exit opps. Firm does seem to get ripped a lot.

As a Han person from Xinjiang, it hurts to see how people always associate China with CCP and just negative things in general. Ugyhurs are not treated fairly but there is no genocide either. The one child policy was only applicable to Han, all other minority groups have always been able to have as many children as they want. How could you call that genocide? There’re so many factors that play into the problems at China and it’s just not black and white.

Left a job in government (prosecution), currently at a mid-size firm. I’m really starting to not only hate law firm life, but the practice of law generally. Is this part of the transition? I left my last job because I was on-call 24/7. Now I’m 24/7 again but due to billable requirements. I have no hobbies, no free time, and only spend about an hour/day with my kids. Not sure I want this life. At least I had insane PTO for govt work.
