D1 You seem really down to earth
In general that's the policy.
Mostly not enforced.
Pastry is a BOLD move OP
Just laugh like you thought they were joking and keep walking. What are they going to do? Kick you out of the hotel? Turn off your lounge access? Demote you to silver?
No. They probably had an issue with you pouring the whole tray of breakfast pastries into your backpack.
Do you have status? As a Plat guest with Ambassador, I calmly ask to speak with the manager on duty. I then explain to him / her that I will be writing a thorough complaint regarding poor service to my Ambassador if I don't get what I want. Usually they see reason ... and if they don't, I usually end up with 5K in bonus points, so ...
What kinda food are you taking? I usually grab a banana, water and granola bar for the road and never had a problem
If you’re only taking a small amount (pastry, water, apple) I think it’s absurd to force you to eat it inside. Definitely worth bringing up to ambassador + hotel manager.
Only place I've seen this is the JW Marriott Essex House and it's clearly posted everywhere.
Other places, I would need to be physical restrained from taking food out during breakfast hours. Next time just ignore them, keep walking and if they want to chase you down that's their prerogative. Most won't.
Hahah "keep me honest" here guys, am i just being a spoilt consulting brat here who cant deal with being told "no" or is it a reasonable request to have food outside the lounge (not everyone has all day to just hang out in the lounge!) 😱
@M1- yes im plat w/ ambassador status but cant tell if im overreacting to this or not haha
@OP (& larger thread commenters): I've always believed in following the rules if they make sense, and in this case, they don't. To me, status isn't about suite upgrades every stay or free wine / a fruit basket when you arrive (though those are nice 😉) ... it's about living comfortably in the hotel and getting to do what you want / getting what you want, within reason. The request here is so mundane - bringing some food outside of the lounge to eat for breakfast - that is ridiculous someone such as OP, with high status (highest in the system!) is being penalized.
It's like if you were charged $20 / bag to store them overnight between stays - the hypothetical would be ridiculous, and status guests (if not all guests, which imo would be the true "right answer") should not have to pay. Period.
Had 1 pastry, some nuts & an apple juice. Attendant working in the lounge was like "sorry you have to consume that here" 😕😕😕 not sure if just this specific attendant or specific hotel or what. Why does it matter to them where we consume the food?
Agree with Op. Seems like a stupid policy, never ran into someone that enforced it (never even knew it existed).
My husband and I travel with our dog a lot. I get breakfast for both of us and bring it to my room, since doggo isn't allowed in lounge. Ive never been stopped, but I'd basically just ask them which policy they want to enforce - the one that gets every guest a free sniff and lick from my dog, or me eating my food in private.
They have the rule because some people obviously tried to take unreasonable quantities out of the lounge and ruined it for everyone.
To answer the OP, I think removing a small amount of food for yourself should be allowed unless there are multiple signs everywhere to the contrary. Having to tell Elite guests NO is just bad business. This is clearly not about the money, it's about the convenience.
Pastry crossed the line... sorry bro
Just smile, shrug your shoulders and say "no speak English"
I have only seen this enforced when I was overseas in some Asian hotels. But your typical American Sheraton and you were only taking a small plate for yourself seems like the lounge attendant was being a bit over zealous
Just say "I stay in this hotel X nights per year - would you like that business to go to a different hotel or chain?" and be on your merry way. Fuck 'em.
