For me, an important part of growing up was learning that... I'm insignificant to the world. Growing up gifted, winning some awards and athletic competitions gave a sense that I was special, unique, and mattered. Grad school and my 20s hit me like a ton of bricks. My whole self image shattered. There were millions of people smarter, funnier, stronger, more ambitious, and successful than me. Sure, I was good at some stuff, but I was not unique or special for my intelligence, success, or ability. In my 30s, I started to realize that was OK. I had people in my life that loved and respected me. I made a small difference in my corner of the world. I generally like what I do and enjoy my hobbies and time with friends and family. It took me over a decade but I've been able to retool where my sense of self came from. I'm sure this experience is not universal but maybe it will help someone here.

Similar experience here, except Army instead of grad school spurred the realization. There’s always someone cooler than you, and that’s okay.

To manage all of this by 35 this guy probably sacrificed a lot on the basic stuffs. It’s not about dumb or smart it’s more about what you value more between prestige or balance.

Very much this. In my experience, quick ascents like this are much more often than not associated with an imbalanced personal life. I’m grateful to those who sacrifice the latter since they run a good practice that will keep me forever employed, but I ain’t gonna be that robot fam.

The big giveaway is the role in city government. Local government is nepotism central.

But how much can he bench?

Making director before 35 is standard for ex consultants. In fact if they’re that impressive, I’d expect them to be VP or beyond.

Ah, decided I wanted to try to make an impact. I'm in non-profit consulting. Took a pretty decent pay cut, but don't regret it. My old boss did reach out recently asking if I'd come back in a Senior Director role (probably a ~70% raise), which was tempting but I'm good for now. It's great to have the safety net though.

So are you going to hire them?

My ex was a surgeon and partner in her own practice at 35 and all that goes with that. I’m not impressed for the level of sacrifice this guy probably had to do in order to get there as a W2. Rough ROI.

One of my friends is a multi day jeopardy winner. He is in a dead end career, not really that wealthy, and thinks way too highly of himself. Fun guy to get a drink with though.

How good is he at trivia night?!

I’m currently a senior accountant and I mainly focus on accruals and expense analysis. Prior to this role I was in State & Local Tax. I wasn’t sure if tax is where I wanted to be at the time especially because I heard you can get pigeonholed. I actually kind of miss the work that I used to but also found tax can be very mentally challenging. I’m struggling with trying to decide if I should go back to tax or maybe use my current experience to go into FP&A or a Finance related role. Advise please!

Got final interview with 2 ppl from Deloitte yesterday, 1 is a manager and the other is a partner. I think I did well with the manager. For the partner, he asked 2/4 questions that I did not prepare so did not answer as well as expected. He stopped asking me after just 10 mins with those 2 questions. Given that I have some strengths from my resume ( high gpa, passed cpa) and fluent communication, friendly manner. Any hope?
