Just hired at a Big 4 as a consultant, which was to be perma-full remote. Am now being asked to travel for projects with unclear % of travel time. How can I best say “no” and stand my ground on what was agreed upon? Or under what circumstances should I comply with travel when it was not agreed upon?

They most likely meant fully remote in the sense that you never had to go in to your company’s office. But client travel is kinda part of the consulting game.

Agree with SC1. Although I was given clarity when I joined, I am fully remote from office but travel to clients as needed.

I feel for you as I can imagine this turn of events has made you uncomfortable. But the truth is I’ve never worked consulting and not had to travel. Some do I guess but jobs are going to evolve all the time. Is there a reason that you won’t travel

like

Also I thought maybe the WFH vs RTO debate had gotten this firm to allow full remote to attract and retain top talent, from other firms that are mandating RTO

If you complain about this, they’re just going to think you dont understand what consulting is. If you don’t like travel, get a new job.

Most clients are still open to the “I’m not comfortable” excuse. Maybe you get lucky and they are okay with that for now. But agree with SC1, this is part of the job.

Did you get it in writing?

Yeah, system and paper says “full remote”. Although based on other comments it may only refer to not being in Big4’s office

like

Yeah ime they lie a lot. Not on purpose but because they don't know. I was told a lot of things before I signed that were not true. If you really don't want to travel I'd cut your losses, find a new job, and say you took the time off for health reasons

Did travel not come up in the interview? Did you not ask about it, or did you think remote meant you just stay in your home 365 days a year?
