Just hit exec plat and have lifetime 1k with United. Am I wrong to want to diversify my status and fly some delta? I have some coast to coast J class travel planned. NY/SF based and use miles for J..

How senior in the Firm are you? With lifetime 1K that's got to be at least 12 years of flying, assuming a fairly agressive 250k per year (no lifetime bonus for premium cabins)

like

Not wrong at all. I’d def do the same but ensure you retain your exec plat status! Congrats, btw! Welcome to the club ;)

One consideration is if you might spend enough in a year to reach one of the top statuses (Global Services, Concierge Key, Delta 360). If that could be the case, it probably would make less sense to diversify.

AA and United have better mileage redemption values locally and globally. Something else to consider

like

I do the same route and just switched from delta to Alaska (upon getting platinum again) for the same reason. They'll match status (once) and their miles go further than I've found deltas to. Take advantage of being on a route with options!

like

Damn dawg. How much do you fly? And how long you been flying?

like

Delta miles are called “skypesos” for a reason. Stick with UA and AA.

like

yes delta miles suck hard for redemption on the most important thing, flights. but you can use them to get massages in certain lounges and premium alcohol. main advantage of delta is just better domestic operations. fewer delays, better service, etc.

D2, I disagree. I just booked F to the Maldives for my wife and I - going there we’re flying Etihad the apartment, and Qatar QSuites on the way back for 370k AA miles all in

There are sweet spots in different award charts (like ANA/JAL for US to Europe, Aegean from South Asia to North Asia for 21k miles in J and Air Canada Aeroplan for allowing routings via Europe to Asia and stopovers in both directions, the net of which is essentially a round the world ticket for 155k miles in J), so can be worth diversifying a bit or at least having AMEX MR and/or CSR points you can opportunistically transfer to carriers. UA/Star Alliance now tends to have the best award availability, with AA, which used to be good, now quite poor. DL award prices are ridiculous and I only ever book saver awards on any carrier.

class to Asia and Europe. Should I take advantage of the EXP earning rates or spread my mileage balanced and statuses out a bit?

250K/ year?

AA has terrible redemption value. Not sure why you would want to branch out, I prefer putting it into one or two accounts to also benefit from the status (earning rate). I try to always have enough United and delta points so I can get flights for my wife and myself for international trips, much easier to have that amount when you put eggs in one basket.
