I actually hear this a lot from creatives. My advice is to work on your soft skills. At this career stage, it’s no longer just about putting pen to paper. You have to be able to sell yourself and the ideas and speak as a leader/authority. Focus on honing your communication and relationship-building skills, so you can cultivate a strong presence in the room.
You also don't necessarily have to talk the most or be the loudest in the room. Sometimes it's about timing. Have the right comments or even better, ask the right questions, at the right time. Don't talk nonstop, but make it so that when you DO talk, people listen.
It’s easier to learn how to present better than to learn how to come up with good ideas or write better. You’ll be fine. I’d rather work with you than with those who present bad ideas amazingly.
When people ask for advice, don’t say “liaise."
Sell, sell, sell!!! Be sure your ideas always connect back to the strategy and showcase your thinking behind the inking - it will help them see you as a well rounded creative vs. someone who can just turn a phrase.
Don’t be afraid to ask your manager or HR dept what your company offers. Maybe they would pay for public speaking classes for people. Maybe its a good time for a higher up to do a lunch and learn on how to present. As creatives, we studied art. Many of us introverts. Any sort of talent we have with being a great public speaker or just naturally more outgoing is a bonus. Love the improv idea too
What SC2 says is spot on.
@JCW1 I had a job as a tour guide and no doubt it's helped with my presentation/pitching skills.
Also, if you're passionate about an idea, and you know it inside and out, you'll sell it without needing to put on pitch theater.
Speak more louder, present more better.
I’ve heard improv classes, joining toastmasters, or finding gigs as a weekend tour guide help. Has anyone done these activities and saw their presentation skills improve?
It really is all about timing and delivery. Wait for the right moment, then sell your idea. Know your audience. The way you sell an idea to an account person is different from a CD, which is different from a client.
But for serious, ask good questions, show your thinking, sell to your team not just clients. Know your audience 💯.
It’s true... just because someone muscles in and takes control of the room doesn’t mean the room appreciates it. Just make sure you get a word in at the end or raise your hand or whatever if you feel strongly about expressing something. Don’t do it for the sake of just asserting yourself. People see through that
